Step-by-Step Instructions for Making a Patriotic Wreath Using Wooden Spoons
Step 1: Creating the Spoon Star
- Start by hot gluing the handle of one wooden spoon to the back end of the spoon side of another wooden spoon.
- Repeat this step with a third wooden spoon, gluing the handle to the back of the spoon side of another spoon.
- Continue the process by adding a fourth wooden spoon and finally a fifth wooden spoon.
- The great thing about using hot glue is its pliability, allowing you to easily shape the spoons into a star. Adjust them accordingly.
- To ensure stability, add additional hot glue to fill any gaps between the spoons.
I used some fishing line on all of the intersections to secure the star as well.
Step 2: Painting the Spoon Star
While the spoon star can be left as is, if you want it to pop on your front door, I recommend painting it white. Apply a coat of white Apple Barrel multi-surface paint to the entire spoon star using a paintbrush. Let the first coat of paint dry, and then apply a second coat for better coverage. Apple Barrel paint is water-soluble, making it easy to clean up afterward.
Alternative Painting Option:
If you want to explore different painting techniques, you can use Folk Art Home Decor Wood Tint and Folk Art Ultra Dye.
- Paint the center of the spoon star with white wood tint.
- Add Folk Art Ultra Dye (Infrared) to the bottom half of the handle, overlapping it with the white section.
- Apply Folk Art Ultra Dye (Blue Bayou) to the top part of the spoon.
This alternative technique offers a variety of creative possibilities.
Step 3: Adding Ribbons to the Wreath
Once the white paint is dry, it’s time to enhance the wreath with ribbons. Decide where you want to place the ribbon on the star—top, bottom, or center. Shorten the ribbons as needed, and use hot glue to attach them to the back of the wooden spoon star.
Here are some embellishment ideas for the DIY patriotic wreath:
- Flags and Stripes: Attach small American flags or fabric strips with patriotic colors (red, white, and blue) to the wreath. You can tuck them in between the wooden spoons or attach them with hot glue.
- Burlap Accents: Create burlap bows or rosettes to add a rustic charm to the wreath. Attach them strategically around the wreath for a textured and festive look.
- Greenery and Flowers: Incorporate greenery, such as faux leaves or vines, to add depth and texture. You can also add pops of color with different color carnation flowers, red roses, blue delphiniums, chrysanthemums, other blue flowers. Attach them using hot glue or wire.
- DIY 4th of July Decorations: Use the wooden spoons to create additional DIY decorations. For example, you can paint small American flags on the spoons or create miniature flag banners to hang from the wreath.
- Personalized Touch: Add a small wooden easel to the wreath with a personalized message, such as “Happy 4th of July” or “Proud to be American.” Paint or use markers to write the message on the easel.
Remember to experiment and get creative with these embellishments to make your wreath unique and eye-catching.
Step 4: Hanging the Patriotic Wreath
Attach a piece of fishing line to the top of the wooden spoon star for hanging. Alternatively, you can use a magnetic hook to hang it on your door. Admire your patriotic wreath—a beautiful symbol of your love for America and a festive decoration for Independence Day!
My favorite thing about this wreath is that I’ll be able to leave the star up for every season, and simply change out the ribbon or decor. Now I can use it as a fall, spring, and winter wreath with just a few simple touches!

Additional Spoon Crafts Ideas
Painted Spoons
- Remember that extra wooden spoon? Let’s turn it into a game!
- Use the wooden spoon as a tool for an egg game, where participants balance an egg on the spoon and carry it across the yard, passing it to others.
- You can also play relay races, beach ball games, or keep a balloon in the air using the spoon.
- Please note that painted spoons are not safe for food.
Wood Burned Spoon:
- Grab a wood burning tool kit, such as the Plaid one mentioned earlier.
- Choose the desired tip and set the temperature according to the instructions.
- Let the tool heat up for approximately 10 minutes.
- Use the wood burning tool to write words or draw a design on a wooden spoon.
- This spoon is safe for serving food.
Alternative Spoon Designs:
- If you’re not comfortable freehanding your design, there are other options.
- Get adhesive stencils and place them on the wooden spoon.
- Color the inside of the stencils with a pencil.
- Remove the stencils and trace over the penciled words or design using the wood burning tool.
- This technique allows for precision and creativity.
Spoon Painting:
- For a touch of color, consider painting the handle of a wooden spoon using Folk Art Color Shift (Green Gold) or any color you prefer.
- Apply the paint entirely to the handle and let it dry.
- Draw or trace a design onto the spoon using a pencil or tracing paper.
- Use the wood burning tool to trace over the design, ensuring the part that touches food is wood burned.
Note: Create multiple wood burned or painted spoons and arrange them in a vase for an attractive table centerpiece. They will be both decorative and functional for serving food.
