Today we’re going to be talking about the many unique uses for tea bags other than for a cup of tea. I use a lot of tea bags and am always looking for a new use for this “one-use” item. We’ll be talking about everything from reusing old tea bags to using fresh loose leaf tea. You won’t believe how many there are used tea bags, wet tea bags, and fresh tea. I like peppermint tea, but you can also use white tea, black tea bags, herbal tea, chamomile tea, or green tea bags.

We grow mint in our garden every year and I dry it out and then I crush it. I store it in a mason jar and it works great to either make my own tea or use for some other hacks I will share with you today.
What To Do with Leftover Tea Bags instructions
Deodorize your garbage
If you like peppermint tea I have some great hacks for you using those peppermint tea bags, dried leaves, or loose tea. Whether you just use the wet leftover tea bags or you want to dry it out simply throw it in a garbage can and it will deodorize.
Deodorize your Refrigerator and freezer
This is a dollar store salt shaker. I keep these on hand for all sorts of different projects. I use a funnel to fill it with crushed mint and then I can easily sprinkle the dried tea leaves.
I open my fridge and my freezer and I take the salt shaker and I set it inside as an air freshener for my fridge and freezer.
These containers work great to sprinkle some of the tea leaves into your garbage cans as a deodorizer.
wash your hands
After I’ve chopped something stinky I use some soap to wash my hands and then rub my hands with damp tea bags to eliminate scents and odors on my hands and make them smell good.
Clean sinks
Another thing I like to do with leftover tea is will sprinkle some of it in my sink. I then add a little bit of my dish soap and use my scrub pad to scrub it clean. This will clean the sink because the soap is disinfecting and antibacterial and the tea acts as a mild abrasive. It also deodorizes the sink and once I rinse the sink it deodorizes and cleans my garbage disposal as well.
Make a Tea Water Spray
The next thing I will do with my teabags is added them to two cups of warm water in a measuring cup and let that steep for about 10 minutes. I use a funnel to add this tea water to a spray bottle.
Linen and Pillow Spray, and Air Freshener
Now let’s talk about all the uses of tea water. You can use this as a tea scented air freshener or spray it on pillows and linens to get rid of bad smells.
Repel Bugs and Rodents
If you use peppermint tea you can spray it along baseboards and entryways as bugs don’t like the smell of peppermint.
Static Eliminator
I keep this tea water on hand in my closet. It can help eliminate static with just a little spritz, like a natural static guard.
Conditioning Rinse
I keep a spray bottle of tea water in the shower and after I am done shampooing and conditioning I rinse my hair with tea water. It makes my hair smell amazing and it’s actually good for your hair.
Natural Bug spray
Peppermint and lavender tea make great bug sprays in the summer which is a great natural way to keep the bugs off. If you have bald spots in your yard put your grass seed down and sprinkle peppermint tea all over, it’ll keep the rodents out while the grass grows back. I will save all of my tea whether it is old teabags or dry leaves of loose-leaf tea, dry it and add it to the soil in the garden to act as a fertilizer. I will also use peppermint tea water spray as a natural and organic way to keep garden pests off my outdoor plants.
Use in a Bath
Draw a bath and use your leftover tea bags in the tub for a wonderful refreshing soak.
Drawer Sachets
I like to place dried tea bags in my dresser drawers as an air freshener. You can also reuse tea bags in the bath water for a really lovely soak.
Puffy Eyes and Sinus Relief
If you have puffy eyes from tiredness or sinus trouble take some of your moist tea bags, especially the tea bags with peppermint for sinuses, and place them on your eyes it’s a great way to reduce the puffiness and eliminate dark circles.
Shoe Deoderizer
Placing tea bags in your shoes helps deodorize them and absorb moisture inside stinky shoes. It is great to get rid of the foot odor inside of them.
Use in Lawn Bald Spots
If you have some bald spots in your yard, put your grass seed on it and sprinkle peppermint tea all over it. It’ll keep the rodents out while the grass grows back.
Use in your garden
Now that’s my garden over there and I’m going to save all of my tea, I’m going to dry it and then I’m going to put it into the soil to help fertilize it. I’ll also make a bunch of peppermint water spray to keep the pests off my plants and it keeps it organic and natural that way.
Simmer Pot
If you have a crock pot you can add tea bags and let them simmer in the crock pot to make your whole house smell amazing. You can use your favorite teabags whether they are cinnamon, peppermint or fruit and it will make your whole house smell great.
I’ve only touched on a few things here, but there are so many other uses for dry tea bags and used tea leaves. You can use them to degrease pans, clean glass surfaces, clear up acne, relieve sunburn or irritated skin, soothe bug bites, dye clothes, enjoy facial steam with tea bags, and even make fire starters.
The next time you pull your tea bag out of your cup, stop and think of all the useful ways you can use that used bag. Here is a list of even more possibilities:
- Add the tea to your compost pile
- Relieve razor burn
- Help clean grease off of dirty dishes
- Add it to your garden as it adds a nitrogen-rich component and acid-loving plants. Sprinkle around the base of your plants
- Use the damp leaves or dry them for many of these hacks.

- Clean your hardwood floors with tea water
- Use it to clean your mirrors and windows just use a lint-free cloth to wipe it off.
- Clean wood surfaces with the leftover tea and use a microfiber cloth
- Soothe dry skin
If you make a weak brew for 30 seconds it pulls all of the caffeine out and you can dump that out and start again and still make a strong tea. Make a pot of water or a cup of water, the choice is yours. Regardless, these are not just one-use items.

I save our used tea bags for cleaning cast iron skillets. Fill skillet with water, throw in used tea bags (I usually use around 5) after it boils drain, use a stiff brush to clean, rinse and wipe dry or put the skillet back on the burner until it’s dry. This is the easiest method I have found to clean cast iron.
