How To Organize Kitchen Drawers

The first step – declutter. How many of the same utensils do you really need? Ask yourself – do I really need/use this??? A great place to start is to take everything out and start from scratch.

Next get some baskets that will fit into your drawer and help with the littler items.

Next get some baskets or storage bins that will fit into your drawer and serve as interior organizers. You can use smaller plastic containers for a top drawer or smaller drawers where you will keep small items and smaller utensils. You may want to use larger bins or clear containers in a low drawer, lower cabinets or deeper drawers to store larger items within easy reach. If you have plenty of counter space, a knife block may be a good option to store sharp knives and free up space in your kitchen utensil drawer. In addition, a wooden spice drawer insert is a perfect solution for organizing a messy spice drawer.

Sometimes it helps to take everything out and start from scratch. The above and below before...

  • Kitchen Cabinets – get an internal pan rack
  • Place baskets in your deep drawers so it’s easier to find things.
  • If you don’t want dollar store baskets, you can use bamboo drawer dividers or bamboo drawer organizers.
  • If it’s too much for you, hire a professional organizer (or me). You can also recruit a family member to help you.
  • Use the back of your cabinet doors to store more like your frying pans or lids.
  • These tips can be adjusted for small drawers, narrow drawers, etc

    1. So smart, I love that idea. Thanks for sharing!

  2. Oh my goodness, your two drawers hold as much as my one drawer. LOL I actually have 2 fairly good size drawers in my dining room, and 1 small one in my kitchen. The only one that I’ve ever been able to organize is the one with my dinnerware. No matter what I I do our “junk drawer” keeps getting junkier. LOL “Where should I put this?” Answer “IDK, Junk Drawer”. Get a new utensil? Where do I put this? IDK Utensil Drawer (small one} is full as is the large utensil jar on the stove. “Junk Drawer”. I think the “mess” fairies live in those two drawers because every time I clear them out and get rid of some “junk”, within a month, They’re junky again. 🙁 That’s with dividers & small basket, BTW. Love your idea though, don’t get me wrong. I just have too much “junk”! 🙂

    1. Thank you Linda – I totally get it. We have a few junk drawers in our house. They fill up and then it’s time to go through and purge. My husband always says he finally figures out where stuff goes and I change it. I said I only do that if the system isn’t working LOL 🙂 Hugs my friend. I hope you are having a great day!

  3. I really need to do this! I only have two kitchen drawers; one for eating utensils and another for cooking utensils and with the boys “helping” to put away dishes I often can not even get the cooking utensil drawer to open. Pinning!

  12. Oh yes, the holy grail of tidy – the kitchen drawer! I like to divide and conquer too, but I think I probably need to give mine another sort out as they are nowhere near as neat as yours!

    1. Thank you so much Julie, and yes I totally know what you mean. We constantly gain more and every once and a while we need to weed out.
