Embracing Rustic Charm: Reclaimed Wood and Natural Elements
Rustic charm is all about incorporating reclaimed wood and natural elements for an earthy feel.
Use branches, acorns, and pinecones for a nature-inspired look. Simply scatter acorns along your mantel, or fill vessels, trays, and shallow bowls, with pinecones, and acorns.
Orange pumpkins provide a pop of color against the antique wood spools, brown mantel, and basket.
Try some DIY projects like crafting wooden signs, a fall wreath, a banner, and twig garlands.

Get your kids involved too. While taking a walk one day, my kids and I gathered pine cones. My older kiddo got competitive with me to spot the pine cones first. My toddler thought it was a really fun game and was giggling up a storm while she ran to pick them up.
Sophisticated Elegance: Creating an Upscale Fall Mantel
Choosing a neutral color palette for a timeless aesthetic sets the tone for a sophisticated and upscale mantel. Here I use a variety of fresh eucalyptus and filler white berries to create a loose garland. The green and white pumpkins on the hearth echo the colors of the garland.
Next, incorporate metallic accents and elegant candle holders with neutral candlesticks. I like to mix materials like wood vases and metal candle holders. The copper lanterns and brass container on the ground play well with the wood and work to soften the black metal and tile.
Showcase vintage finds and antique accessories to add another layer of interest. Above, my vintage brass vases and candle holders add just the right amount of shine to contrast our DIY wood mantle and garland.
I think this look can easily work in a minimalist home by removing some of the greenery and accessories from the top.

Layer textiles like cozy blankets, grain or flour sacks, calico, and plaid scarves. Here I played with the textures of a denim throw, a flour sack, and a calico throw pillow.
Showcase a collection of mason jars filled with fall foliage. I cut the last of my yellow yarrow and placed them in vintage glass jars with vase fillers like dried chestnuts and wood beads.
Integrate rustic elements like harvest bushel baskets, antique wood barrels, burlap, and chicken wire. The barrel shown upside down was in our basement from previous owners. It is marked “Woodenware” on the bottom. I’m not sure if it is part of an old ice cream maker, but it has a new life in my decor now!
The main focal point here is an old window with red trim that reminds me of old barns. An old chalkboard with a fall message would also be a great fit for this theme.

Set the mood with candle holders and soft lighting for a romantic mantel.
Mix and match candles of different heights. Get creative and use different items as a candle holder, for example, a decanter like the glass one I show above on the left.
Incorporate mirrors and metallic accessories to amplify the candlelight effect. A little bit of shine goes a long way!
To add more softness and cozy vibes, I propped pillows and a throw blanket in a basket in front of the hearth.

Explore warm tones like deep oranges, rich browns, and golden yellows for autumnal inspired mantle. I draped a remnant Schumacher fabric from Etsy to serve as a backdrop for the vintage books and wood and brass decor items.
Incorporate the color scheme through artwork, vases, or accessories. For decor that won’t bust my budget, I love to mix old and new treasures that I already own.
Small pumpkins set next to vases or atop stacks of old books would be super charming.

Using various pumpkin sizes and colors for visual interest gives a fresh from the pumpkin patch feel. DIY wreaths or store-bought wreaths made of dried grasses, pods, fall leaves, and other natural materials fit the theme well.
Creating a cascading effect with mini pumpkins and vines would also look gorgeous.
Incorporating faux pumpkins works well for longevity and versatility. The ones I used above are real, but if you are going for a specific color palette faux pumpkins and gourds can be really helpful.
The pampas grass wreath hanging here would be perfect in a boho style home. Adding more pampas grass, feathers, and dried flowers would all tie in well too.
Harvest Bounty: Showcasing Dried Leaves and Wheat Stalks
Use dried leaves, branches, and wheat for an autumnal touch. I gathered dried flowers from my garden and even apples from the fridge!
Create a symmetrical or asymmetrical arrangement with natural elements. Arrange your items with variations in height.
Combine dried elements with traditional fall colors. Here I incorporated fresh mums in harvest baskets. Chrysanthemums are the quintessential fall flower!
If you are lucky enough to have a farm or produce stand nearby, check there for wheat stalks, bushel baskets, and other fun stuff.
