What do you need to make a yarn or ribbon wreath?

I put batteries into the LED light strand, and I wound it around the wreath form.

Yarn or Ribbon Wreath Instructions

Here are the simple steps to making this yarn wreath. I liked the look of the heart wreath for Valentine’s Day, but you can make this for any holiday. Try switching ribbons for a Christmas wreath or fall wreath.

Step 1: Add LED lights

I put batteries into the LED light strand, and I wound it around the metal wreath frame.

I tied one end of the yarn/fabric onto the wreath form and began winding the yarn/fabric around the wreath form.

Step 2: Secure yarn or ribbon to form

I tied one end of the yarn onto the wreath form and began winding the yarn around the wire wreath frame. You could easily use ribbon of your choice as well.

I continued all the way around the wreath form and I wrapped the battery pack from the lights inside. I could still feel the switch through the fabric to turn it on and off.

Step 3: Continue to wrap yarn or ribbon

I continued all the way around the entire wreath form and I wrapped the battery pack from the lights inside. I could still feel the switch through the yarn to turn it on and off.

I tied off the the other end onto the wreath form, and made a loop to hang the wreath from.

Step 4. Tie off ribbon end and make loop

I tied off the other end onto the back of the wreath form and made a loop for a wreath hanger. I cut off the end of the ribbon. You can double knot this loop to make it more secure.

I love how the wreath turned out and the lights happen to twinkle. You can leave it as is or turn on the lights. I made this for Valentine's Day, but I could easily leave this up all year around.

Hang it on your front door as a seasonal wreath.  Add bows to that wreath frame, or hot glue other accents from craft stores if you like.  You can customize this wreath for any holiday. I like this in my home’s decor, and I leave it up year round.

Other wreath ideas include:

  • Use wire ribbon (see tips below) or floral wire to wrap your wire frame for more texture and structure.
  • Use pipe cleaners, spools of ribbon, greenery, or faux flowers for embellishments. Switch embellishments for different seasons or holidays.
  • Use these same simple steps to make burlap wreaths using burlap ribbon.
  • You can use these for your Christmas decorating making a beautiful wreath.
  • This makes a wonderful housewarming or Easter, Spring, Summer, Thanksgiving, or Christmas gift. It’s a great project for the holiday season. Just try new ribbon colors.
  • Try different ribbons. Think about using different patterns of ribbon, different colors, or even textures like satin, fuzzy, etc. Try red, blue and white ribbon for a patriotic July wreath!
  • Use deco mesh ribbon and attach it to your wreath base.  You’ll be surprised how easy it is.
  • You can add words by creating them with your silhouette or cricut.
How do you make a wreath with wired ribbon?

Follow this same tutorial. You’ll need the same supplies but add wired ribbon. To make this wreath with wired ribbon, start by securing one end of the ribbon to the wreath form. Then as outlined above, wrap the ribbon around the wire wreath frame. Secure it in place as you go so the ribbon does not slip. Add embellishments such as bows or other accents to match your home decor.

How do you attach ribbon or yarn to a wire wreath?

To attach ribbon to a wire wreath, secure one end of the ribbon or yarn onto the wreath frame using a small knot or a bit of wire. As you wrap the ribbon, be sure to overlap each loop slightly to cover the entire wreath. Once at the end, secure the end of your ribbon in place with a knot on the underside of the frame. Since you are using a wire frame, securing the ribbon or yarn is a simple step.

How much ribbon do you need to make a 14 inch wreath?

To make a 14 inch wreath, you’ll need approximately 8 to 10 yards of ribbon. Remember you need enough length to wrap the ribbon around the entire wreath form and to create a loop for a wreath hanger. If you are using a 12 inch wreath form, have at least 6 to 8 yards of ribbon. Keep in mind, if you are using wider ribbon, it will take less. And, for the smaller ribbon you’ll need more.
