DIY Household Cleaners Q & A

Is Dawn and vinegar a good cleaner?

Yes, a mixture of Dawn dish soap and vinegar can be an effective cleaner for certain purposes. Both Dawn dish soap and vinegar have cleaning properties and can be used in various cleaning tasks around the house.

When combined, Dawn dish soap and vinegar can create a powerful cleaning solution that can help remove dirt, grease, and grime. The soap helps to break down and lift away the dirt, while vinegar acts as a natural disinfectant and helps to cut through grease.

Here’s a simple recipe for a Dawn and vinegar cleaner:
Ingredients:
1 cup of white vinegar
1 cup of water
1 tablespoon of Dawn dish soap

Instructions:
Mix the white vinegar and water in a spray bottle.
Add the Dawn dish soap to the mixture and gently swirl to combine.
Spray the mixture onto the surface you want to clean.
Allow the solution to sit for a few minutes to help loosen any dirt or grime.
Use a sponge, cloth, or scrub brush to scrub the surface.
Rinse the area with clean water and wipe it dry.

This mixture can be effective for cleaning various surfaces such as countertops, stovetops, bathroom fixtures, and more. However, it’s important to note that vinegar is acidic and should not be used on certain surfaces like marble or natural stone, as it can cause etching or damage. Additionally, it’s always a good idea to test the solution on a small, inconspicuous area before using it on a larger surface to ensure it doesn’t cause any adverse reactions.

What not to clean with vinegar?

While vinegar is a versatile and effective cleaner for many surfaces, there are some materials and items that should not be cleaned with vinegar. Here are a few examples:
Natural stone surfaces: Vinegar can etch and dull the surface of natural stones like marble, granite, limestone, and travertine. It’s best to use a cleaner specifically designed for these types of surfaces.

Egg spills or stains: Vinegar can actually cause egg stains to coagulate and become more difficult to clean. Instead, it’s better to clean up egg spills with a mild detergent or soap and water.

Hardwood floors: Vinegar’s acidity can damage the finish and potentially strip the protective coating on hardwood floors. It’s safer to use cleaners recommended specifically for hardwood floors.

Irons and steamers: Vinegar can corrode the internal components of irons and steamers, so it’s best to avoid using it in these appliances. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for proper cleaning methods.

Electronics and screens: Vinegar is not suitable for cleaning electronic devices, including computer screens, TVs, smartphones, and tablets. It can damage the delicate coatings and screens. Use specialized screen cleaners or microfiber cloths instead.

Some kitchen appliances: Avoid using vinegar to clean appliances with rubber seals or gaskets, such as coffee makers and dishwashers. The acidity can deteriorate the rubber components over time. Refer to the appliance’s manual for recommended cleaning methods.

Cast iron cookware: Cleaning cast iron with vinegar can strip away the seasoning and damage the pan. Instead, use a mild dish soap and water, or follow the manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning cast iron.

It’s always a good idea to read the care instructions for specific items or surfaces before using vinegar or any cleaning product to ensure you’re using the appropriate method for cleaning and protecting them.

Can you mix baking soda and vinegar to clean?

Yes, baking soda and vinegar can be mixed together to create a cleaning solution. When combined, they can create a foaming reaction that can help remove dirt, grime, and certain stains. Here’s how you can use them together:

Surface cleaning: Sprinkle baking soda on the surface you want to clean, such as a sink, bathtub, or stove. Then, spray or pour vinegar over the baking soda. The mixture will begin to foam and fizz. Allow it to sit for a few minutes to let the reaction work and loosen dirt and grime. Then, scrub the surface with a sponge or brush and rinse with water.

Drain cleaning: Pour about half a cup of baking soda down the drain, followed by a cup of vinegar. The mixture will foam and fizz, which can help remove buildup and odor. Let it sit for a few minutes, then flush the drain with hot water.

Stain removal: For certain types of stains, you can create a paste by mixing baking soda and vinegar. Apply the paste to the stain and let it sit for a while. Then, scrub the area gently with a brush or cloth and rinse thoroughly.

It’s important to note that while baking soda and vinegar can be effective for certain cleaning tasks, they may not be suitable for all surfaces. For example, the foaming reaction can be too abrasive for delicate materials or finishes. Always test a small, inconspicuous area first and follow any specific instructions or warnings provided by the manufacturer of the surface you are cleaning.
