For this first crate, I will be using Apple Barrel paint in the color pumpkin orange. As you can see here I'm just painting the slats with orange paint.

Outdoor Fall Decor instructions

1. Paint the crates

For this first crate, I will be using Apple Barrel paint in the color pumpkin orange. As you can see here I’m just painting the slats with orange paint. I love acrylic paint because it cleans up with water. It is easy to clean off your brushes as well as your skin and clothes. If you get acrylic paint on your clothes you will want to treat it right away. If you leave it the pigment in the paint will dye your clothes so you will want to get that cleaned up right away. I’m going to go ahead and finish painting all of these slats and you want to make sure to get inside all the little spaces and edges on either side. Once I’m done painting I’ll give you a look at what it looks like.

So I will go ahead and paint the other side and get inside the handle of the crate, although that's not super important for this project.

Before we move on to the next step, I will let this dry while I work on another area. So I will go ahead and paint the other side and get inside the handle of the crate, although that’s not super important for this project. I’m not worried about it being perfect because I think that rustic feel will be really nice. I’m going to set this crate aside go ahead and paint the other crates so that they can start drying then we can start putting all of this together.

For this next crate and I'm going to use some blue painter's tape as a guide.

For this next crate and I’m going to use some blue painter’s tape as a guide. I will paint both ends of the crate on either side of the tape when I peel this up it’ll be a nice clean line.

I'm using the exact same orange paint and I'm just painting along the painter's tape.

Here I’m using the exact same orange paint and I’m just painting along the painter’s tape. If some of the paint gets under the tape I’m not super worried about it what I’m going to be doing with this crate. I just want to make sure to get all of the wood pieces fully painted including all the nooks and crannies. I’m going to go ahead and finish painting all of this and then I will show you what it looks like and what we’re doing with the bottom half.

For the bottom half, I'm going to be using Apple Barrel bright yellow

For the bottom half, I’m going to be using Apple Barrel bright yellow. Just like before, I will paint all of these slats and in between in all the spaces. You could pick another color if you like, this is just what I chose. Keep in mind that you can use other paints but I really like acrylic paint. I will finish painting this and then I’ll show you what it looks like

I'm going to take this tape and carefully peel it off and then I'm going to let this dry completely.

In my third crate, I will be painting apple Barrel kelly green.

In my third crate, I will be painting apple Barrel kelly green. Again, I’m not looking for perfection. I kind of like it when the wood comes through but you could give this as many coats as you like.

2. Let the paint dry completely

2. Let the paint dry completely

Here they are all drying and it’s really up to you how much of these crates you want to paint. I just did the front and the top, I’m okay with the sides not being done. I am not panting the inside of my crates because I have a future idea that I want to share with you later. It is totally up to you if you want to paint the sides & inside of your crate. I also paint everything all at once that way one can dry while I work on another. This is much more time efficient.

. I just have a stick for my yard and I've tied a little bit of jute or twine to it.

3. Decorate and embellish your crates

Now you can find fun ways to decorate your faux pumpkins. I just have a stick for my yard and I’ve tied a little bit of jute or twine to it. I’m going to lay it like so and then the jute will come off the front. If you want more or you want Raffia, feel free to do that. As a finishing touch, I will be adding some fall leaves on either side. I will glue them with the hot glue gun, then set this aside to dry. This project is done.

I got a hook and loop Fastener from Dollar Tree. I'm just squeezing the two sides together so that I know exactly how much I need. I'm going to measure it along the length and then I'm going to cut it with scissors

Now we’re going to move on to the next one. I got a hook and loop Fastener from Dollar Tree. I’m just squeezing the two sides together so that I know exactly how much I need. I’m going to measure it along the length and then I’m going to cut it with scissors. I want it to definitely go edge to edge so it’s got a nice stronghold.

Here is the strip and I will attach it to the board I painted.

Here is the strip and I will attach it to the board I painted. Just make a guess at the placement, it doesn’t need to be perfect. I’m going to place this onto the adhesive and press firmly so that it adheres nicely.

. I'm going to add a flower and some buttons for the eyes. I'm going to add a little piece of leaf that I cut out for the nose. I will use a pencil to get a rough idea of where I want to draw the mouth and then we're going to go ahead and glue it all together.

Next, we’re going to work on some embellishments. I’m going to add a flower and some buttons for the eyes. I’m going to add a little piece of leaf that I cut out for the nose. I will use a pencil to get a rough idea of where I want to draw the mouth and then we’re going to go ahead and glue it all together.

For this last one, the first thing I did was draw the face, mouth, chin, nose, some stitches, and hairline

For this last one, the first thing I did was draw the face, mouth, chin, nose, some stitches, and hairline. Next, I will add eyes using folk art home decor chalk paint in white. For the hair, I am using folk art home decor chalk paint in black. If you are not comfortable painting you can also use adhesive google eyes, adhesive vinyl, or buttons for the eyes. Unfortunately, all of our stores are currently out of them so I could not get google eyes. As the eyes are drying we can work on the hair. I will follow the marks I made with a marker and again its hair so it’s okay if something’s not perfect.
