Chalkboard Placemats Instructions:

1. I started by cleaning the place mats to free them off all dust, dirt, oils, and debris.

2. I painted each of them with Folk Art Chalkboard Paint. I followed the instructions on the back giving them 2 coats and letting them dry completely.

3. I then seasoned the place mats with chalk. This is done by coloring the entire surface with chalk. It’s an important step as this is what allows the surface to be erased. Missing this step causes the writing to stick to the paint.

4. After the entire piece is colored in, I erased each one.

5. They are ready to be used – use white or colorful chalk.

These can be used for so many different things –
- Place markers
- Homework – math problems, spelling words,
- Games
- Doodling – imagination starters
- And they can be great as lap trays – either in the house or perhaps on a car ride!

Now grab that piece of chalk, dry erase crayons, and have fun with these unique placemats!
This is a great way for family members to have fun together, place the chalkboard mats on the dinner table and use them at dinner time. We have used them at our dining table as well during holidays.
If you don’t love chalk you can look for dustless chalk, and use other things like chalkboard markers, chalk markers, or chalk crayons.
Get creative and make themed chalkboard placemats for any occasion. When it’s time to clean up these DIY chalkboard placemats clean them off with a baby wipe, or damp cloth.

Chas, this is brilliant. I have some of those placemats hiding in my china cabinet right now. You’ve inspired me to dig them out and transform them!
Thanks so much for joining the Grace at Home party at Imparting Grace. I’m featuring you this week!
Thank you so much Richella, I’m thrilled you like them and are inspired to create them as well. Thank you for the feature and I’ll see you at the next party.
Yeah Chas’ another winner! I don’t know how I missed this before or maybe the timing wasn’t just right, but I have some older placemats that I’ve been trying to decide whether to keep or replace. Now I have another option. I just have to find my chalk paint. LOL Mine are blue vinyl so I don’t know if the paint will stick. Luckily one of the place mats has a purple mark across it. I was going to toss it, but kept it “just in case.” LOL I can try this on that one. I’ll scuff it up with some sandpaper or 0000 steel wool and maybe even add a coat of primer to help it stick. Any other thoughts?
Thanks Linda and I’m thrilled you want to try it. I know those grandkids will have so much fun with them. Let me know how it goes painting and if it lasts for you on those vinyl placemats.
Wonderful idea and all your ideas are great. You must have a great mind to think of all the items that you can work with.
I do have to say though, I have never seen any placemats like those. I’ve only seen material ones.
Thank you so much Marie, you just made my day friend. They were unique placemats, that’s true. I do know you can paint this chalk paint onto thicker fabric placemats too and have fun with them. I have also painted baking sheets with chalkboard paint and used them as lap trays or placemats too 🙂
I love making things with chalkboard paint! These are so cool!
Thank you so much Niky, it’s so addicting isn’t it?
