I found a dining room table and set of chairs for free.  I grabbed them both and knew I'd have fun giving them a makeover.

How do you remake old chairs?

I cleaned both chairs with Krud Kutter to remove all the dirt, sticky residue, and prepare them for painting.

Next, I used my Wagner Paint Sprayer to paint on the paint.  I used Behr Ultra Scuff Defense Paint in the color Broadway.  If you don't have a paint sprayer you could hand paint the chairs with a chip brush.

How can I update my dining room table?

I started by sanding the dining table lightly with my Black and Decker Orbital Sander.

Next, I started on the rectangular dining table. I started by sanding the wood top with my Black and Decker Orbital Sander. If you notice small cracks you can fill them with wood filler and sand that smooth.

I wiped the entire table down with Krud Kutter to clean it.

I spray painted the base of the table with the Behr Broadway paint.  This would tie in the base of the table and the chairs.

I used a damp chip brush and painted on Folk Art Home Decor Chalk Paint in Parisian Gray.  Creating a reclaimed, weathered, and barnyard look, I was random with my pattern.

I continued painting and wiping until I got the look I wanted.  I let that dry.

One of the things I love about this table is that the sides fold down to a 2 person size.  I have a very similar one that I inherited from my grandparents.  You can see it on my home tour here.

If a chair is in good condition, it might just need a little staining. If it’s in rough shape, add a couple coats of paint and it’ll look like new again.

How can I update my dining room table?

You can evaluate if the table just needs some touch up with paint or stain. If it needs more than that you can paint the entire table for a fresh look.

Can you paint over a dining room table?

It depends on the material the table is made out of. If the table is made out of wood you can paint over it with some steps like light sanding and using the right paint. If the table is made out of a laminate material, paint often doesn’t stick to this kind of material so you’ll need to put a primer over the table that helps the paint stick.

  5. Chas, what a wonderful find.I think the legs of the table are Federal style, and they are so pretty. I didn’t know you could use Krud Kutter on wood~I just found out about this product from Andrea. Great tutorial and love the color of the paint you selected. Fabulous DIY!
