Easy DIY Chair Cushions Sew and No Sew Options with video
Are you looking for some DIY chair cushions? I have this old farmhouse bench I love but it’s a little hard to sit on. Using rugs from the Target Dollar Spot, I was able to turn them into pillows or cushions.

Here is my bench that is a little rough to sit on for too long.
I bought 4 rugs from the Target Dollar Spot. I couldn’t decide between 2 of the patterns/sayings so I bought both so they could be reversible. Let’s get started with this easy tutorial

I placed 2 of the rugs together with the right sides facing out.
I hot glued 3 of the 4 sides together.
I folded up a fleece blanket and slid it in for the padding inside.
I used self adhesive hook and loop fastener on the last side. This would allow me to take the cover off and wash it if needed.
Here is one completed cushion.
You could alternatively sew the cushions on 3 sides if you like. I did this with the second cushion as I would be making this the back of the bench. I placed ribbon in 2 spots and sewed those into place so that I could tie this cushion onto the top of the bench.
Here is the second cushion.
I set the first one down on the bench seat, and I tied the other cushion to the back. You can see both rug sayings I picked in this picture.

Very clever idea who would of thought to use rugs
Thank you Anita 🙂
What a neat idea. I would never have thought to use rugs to make pillows. They turned out great and give that bench a nice bit of extra character.
Thank you so much Sarah, I’m thrilled you think so 🙂
What a great idea! Very cute!
Thank you so much Sylvia
This is so clever! Looks great!
Thank you so much Pamela
These are so simple and so effective. Really easy for anyone to have a go, with our without sewing! Thanks for the great idea!

I never would have thought to use rugs. I’m going to have to go on the hunt for some. I have a bench that needs longer pillows so I love this!
Thank you so much Denise, and I’m thrilled you like the idea and might use it yourself.
These are so adorable! I would never have thought about making a rug into a cushion. I have a friend who hired someone to make a pillow out of her recently deceased husband’s shirt. It turned out really nice.
Thank you Lisa, and love that your friend had that done. I have a rug someone made out of my grandpa’s old jeans.
What a great idea – and hot glue? Genius! Thank you for sharing at Party In Your PJ’s.
Thank you so much Ann, I’m thrilled you like it.

These cushions are so easy to make. Great idea for a bench as the heavier fabric will take lots of wear and tear. Beautiful job Chas.
Thank you so much Leanna, I’m thrilled you like them.

I love the cushions! The idea to sew three sides and make a velcro side is a great one for washable cushions. I like using hot glue as well. You’re one of my features at the Little Cottage Link Party today! Have a great week!
