If there’s one thing that the majority of us like to do, it’s spending quality time with our loved ones. Whether the guest list is just immediate family or extended family, friends, colleagues, or anyone else you enjoy spending time with. Of course, always going out can be time-consuming, draining, or costly, so occasionally, you might want to entertain people in your home. Not only can this give you more control over the night but the best part is you can spend time together in a comfortable atmosphere that you can be proud of. Of course, if you’re going to entertain guests at home, you’re going to be responsible for making the night enjoyable and for ensuring that everything goes smoothly. With a little advance planning, you can be sure everyone has a great time. So, here are a few top tips that can help things run smoothly and make sure all your guests have a memorable experience.

Top Tips for How To Entertain Guests At Home

Indoors or Outdoors

As we approach the warmer months, we have the option of entertaining house guests within our homes or entertaining guests in outdoor spaces, such as our backyard. Now, there are benefits to both, but both do require preparation. If you’re going to host your guests indoors, making sure that your space is spick and span on the day of the event should be on your to-do list. You also want to make sure there’s enough room for everyone to sit and chat comfortably.

If you’re going to host outdoors, this will be a good time to do some basic gardening (such as mowing the lawn) and ensure there’s plenty of seating on the deck or patio to keep your guests comfortable. With a little creativity, an outdoor party can be a lot of fun whether it involves spending time around a fire pit with hot chocolate or a variety of teas or having an outdoor movie night with finger food. Or how about a night of board games on the deck! Reach out to a Deck Builder to create this if you don’t already have an outdoor party space.

Food and Drinks

If you’re going to have your guests over for a period of time, it’s a good idea to offer food and drinks. This doesn’t have to be a full-fledged dinner party, but maybe just fresh fruit or charcuterie boards. This is relatively straightforward and you do have a few options to choose from. The first thing to do is check everyone’s dietary requirements and food allergies. You may find that you need to provide options for vegans, gluten-free individuals, or people with allergies and intolerances. Next, you should consider whether you want to make life easier for yourself but more costly by ordering takeaway, or harder but cheaper with homemade meals and snacks. Come up with a menu and make sure to prepare the food in time for everyone’s arrival or shortly after their arrival.

Seating

Most of us don’t have much seating, as our homes are only built to accommodate those who live within the space. But if you’re having guests, you may need to invest in some more seating options that can easily be stored away after use. You don’t need a big dining table, just places for all your guests to sit.

It's summertime, and my family enjoys being outside, and dinners on the patio. I used mason jars to create fun fruit mason jar glasses to serve our drinks and celebrate the wonderful season.

Cups, Crockery, and Cutlery

Now for my last tip. Our homes usually have enough cups, plates, bowls, forks, knives, spoons, and more for the people living in the space. You may find that you need to invest more if you’re going to be hosting. Make sure you have plenty of glasses, plates, and cutlery for everyone to eat at the same time. If you don’t want to go to a lot of trouble you can use paper plates and plastic forks, after all the point of the party is enjoying the company, not fancy china. And don’t forget to have lots of ice!

These tips and tricks can help you to best prepare for your guests, creating a night to remember for everyone involved!
