I bought one large crate and 3 small crates from Walmart.

To make this crate truck, I bought one large crate and 3 small crates from Walmart.

The specific crates are here – large crate & mini crate

I painted them all with Apple Barrel bright red acrylic paint, and let them all dry completely.

On the first small crate I painted the bottom 2 slats for the bumper with Folk Art Home Decor Chalk Paint in the color metallic silver.

On the second crate I added wall stickers I found at Dollar Tree to be the windows. Bigger on the front and back sides for windshield and back window, and then smaller on the sides for door windows.

On the 3rd crate I added 2 LED stick on lights from Dollar Tree to become headlights.

On the large crate, I painted the bottom slat with the metallic silver paint for the rear bumper. I hot glued on 2 headlamp lights that I found at Dollar Tree and colored the surface red with a permanent marker for tail lights. I also had wood burned this coaster previously and wood glued that to the back as a license plate.

I found these wooden circles at Walmart in a package of 6. I painted 4 of them with Apple Barrel black acrylic paint and let that dry. I then painted the hubcap with Folk Art Home Decor Chalk Paint in the color Silver Shadow and let that dry. I used wood glue and glued the wheels onto the sides of the small crate with the bumper, and the sides of the large crate for back wheels.

Once the entire piece was dry it was ready to assemble. I stacked the 2 small crates in front for the hood, and the other small one with the windshields on top of the large crate. You could glue these together with wood glue, but I opted to not glue them right now as they stack inside the large crate for easy storage.

Here is the assembled truck from the front. I thought he was missing something so I added a wooden coaster that I had painted with Folk Art Chalkboard Paint. I then used chalk to make the grill. Alternatively I can write messages for the season on this as well.

  24. Kathy Keenan says:

Is there a reason why you used chalk paint on the red pickup truck? If it is going to be outside, wouldn’t a regular exterior paint be better? I live in sunny Arizona!

    1. It is easy to work with, and I had it on hand. You can use whatever paint you want depending on where you’re keeping it. Mine has been inside, and under my covered front porch.

  25. Crystal scanlon says:

Could you please share the measurements for the wooden creates, Walmart doesn’t seem to carry the ones you used and trying to find something similar. Thank you!

  26. Gaye Bigbee says:

This was so easy. I used red and black spray paint but this was so easy. I wish I could post a picture of mine. It was so easy. Thank you.

    1. I’m so thrilled you were able to make one too. You can always email me a picture by replying to one of the email newsletters and send it that way 🙂

  27. How ADORABLE is this very clever idea! Love the headlights and such a smart idea for the tail lights. Mama needs some crates now after seeing this!

    1. Thank you so much Marie! I’m thrilled you like my pick up truck. I like it because I can leave it up all year long and just change seasonally what’s in the truck. I’m excited you want to create one too!

  28. Hello. I would love to make this truck but, need to know how big the circles need to be for the wheels and the dimensions of crates. I clicked on the link that you provided and the large is 18 1/2 inches, does that seem like the correct size?
Is there an actual written supply list anywhere? I would greatly appreciate some assistance =)
    Thank you in advance.
    Heather

  29. Hello

Just finished making the Little Red Truck. Had so much fun doing it? I found it hard to find the right crates. If you get a chance could you send me the measurements of your crates (not the post from Walmart as it doesn’t give measurements) I might have to make my own.
Love your crafts. Thanks for sharing. Wish I could show you how mine turned out.

    Roxy

    1. Hi Roxy, I’m so excited you made one. I’d love to see pictures and you have my email (you can reply to any of my emails/newsletters). I’m so excited to see it. Thank you so much for your kind words.

  30. this truck is really cute..good job. I’ve been wanting to make one for the front yard but haven’t been able to find the small crates that fit the big one … been searching for a few days…
you didn’t give measurements of small crates and large one that work together like this

  31. This truck is so cute. I am thinking of making one for my Mom as a gift. She is just obsessed with the red trucks. I see that you have given the links for the large crates. Unfortunately, when I click on it, it is saying something went wrong. Would you be willing to list the size of it.
    Thank you so much
