Up-cycling a Thrift Store Chair

I picked up this chair at the thrift store for $1.99!  Up-cycling it was easy, just needed little fixing and a little paint!

The first thing I did was remove the price tag and the decals.

Next I sanded the seat as I wanted to re-stain it.  I also decided to lightly sand the rest of the chair with my Black and Decker Random Orbital Sander so that the paint would stick a little better.  Dixie Belle is a great paint and you don’t really need this step.

Someone before me had tried to repair the chair and there was left over wood glue on one of the legs in a couple spots.  I used the sander to get that up as well.

Next I used Dixie Belle White Lighting Cleaner to get the whole chair ready to paint and stain.

I brought the chair inside and then used wood glue to repair the chair leg joints and let that sit for 24 hours.

I then tightened all of the joints on the entire chair to make it more stable.

I painted almost all of the chair with Dixie Belle Caviar.

While that was drying I stained the chair base with VooDoo Gel Up In Smoke Stain.

On the back of the chair in the center I painted first with Dixie Belle Manatee Gray and let that dry.

Once that was dry I painted on Dixie Belle Metallic Silver Base Coat and Dixie Belle Metallic Silver Top Coat.

On the poles between the chair legs I wanted to add a little flare so I just dry brushed on the Dixie Belle Metallic Silver Top Coat.

On the top of the chair and round the base of the wooden seat I rubbed on Dixie Belle Sterling Silver Gilding Wax

I added a little Dixie Belle Hi Ho Silver Glaze to the last leg to continue the extension of the gilding wax.

After letting everything dry the chair is done!

It fits in my kitchen and it’ll also come in handy in our basement as well.

I love the chair. However, I have arthritic hands and fingers. I grabbed a dining room chair from a curb. It is in great shape but the top is worn. Do you have any suggestions to restore without too much effort with the hands?

    1. As long as it isn’t a laminate material, I would recommend using chalk paint as it goes on easy, self levels, etc. Then you could give it a sealing coat.
