Plastic Bottle Hacks
Bug Trap
I cut an empty water bottle in half using utility scissors.
I poured apple cider vinegar into the bottom half of the bottle.
I placed the neck of the bottle into the bottom half of the bottle and secured it into place using painter’s tape.
This trap can be used inside or outside. I placed it in a candle holder that I am now using as a cup holder. I left it overnight to see if it would catch any bugs.
The next day I found a couple of flies, a moth, and some mosquitos inside the trap. I can dump that out, and replenish it with new apple cider vinegar.

Make a fairy luminary
I cut a small water bottle in half with scissors. I brought it outside and painted the top green and the bottom gold with spray paint.
After the bottle dried, I cut a little square out of the bottom half of the bottle.
I cut little slits in the top half of the bottle and bent them outward.
I placed a battery-operated tealight inside and placed the top and the bottom of the bottle back together. I added some embellishments like a little flower by the bottom, a wooden ladybug on top, and a faux succulent to the top.
Charging station
I cut most of the top off of a bottle and then left a little bit at the top with a square section inside (see photo).
I placed my charging plug into the wall, hung the water bottle on it, and plugged in my charging cable and my airpods. you can adjust this bottle size to accommodate phones, and other electronic items. It’ll help keep your counters, desks, and other surfaces clear and wire free. This also works great for travel.
Make a sprinkler
I started by poking holes in my empty bottle. I use a punch to do this and you could use any sharp object. You can poke holes where ever you want and make as many as you like.
I attached the bottle to a hose using gaffers tape. You could use another tape of your choice, and you might want to use a larger bottle and purchase a connector at the hardware store.
I placed this onto our grass and started watering it. We had to get rid of voles recently and we’re in the process of recovering our yard. You can use this concept in gardens as well. I have even made a bigger version with a 2-liter bottle for our kids to play in and you can see that tutorial here It’s a fun way to cool off in the summer.
Self watering system
I put fresh water inside of the bottle.
I then placed the full water bottle upside down on the ground near my plant. The water will stay inside the bottle and the ground will pull it out as it needs it. This is especially great in potted plants both inside and out.
watering can
I poked small holes in a lid of a clear plastic bottle. I filled the bottle with water and placed the lid back on the bottle.
Plastic bottle planter herb garden
I planted some mint in the bottom half of an empty bottle. I could do this with as many different herbs I wanted. I can have an indoor garden year around if I want.
I used my new watering can to water my mint.
ice packs
I froze some water inside an empty bottle. I like to use these in our coolers as they’ll make less of a mess than ice. We also like to use them as ice packs to cool off or for injuries.
Snack Cups
I cut an empty bottle in half and I poured a snack inside the bottle bottom. It makes a great snack cup. I have used these for homework time, grab and go, in the car, and out and about.

Dry Food Storage
I placed a funnel on the opening of the bottle and poured my rice inside of the clear plastic bottle. This is especially helpful if you have a bag of a product. Bags take up so much valuable space and this creates vertical storage.
One great thing that I loved to do when my kids were younger was put their cereal inside these. This way they could help learners to make their own breakfast and the box wasn’t spilled everywhere. You can even make small containers of milk in the fridge so they can pour easily too. (remember the watering can? My kids were fascinated by pouring their milk into their cereal that way).
On a quick side note you can make a simple “find it” game for kids using rice in an old water bottle. You can find the full tutorial here Find It Game
You can do this for any dry item like beans, grains, and cereal as well.
make a recycle bin
We recycle at our house and so we have 2 trashcans in our kitchen. One is for trash and the other is for recyclables. We wanted a clear way to tell them apart, so I upcycled my recycle container! You can find the full tutorial at Easy Upcycled Trashcan and Recycle Container
