Toilet Cleaning Hacks Instructions
It’s a dirty job, but someone has to do it! I use gloves to protect my hands when cleaning.
Disclaimer – I keep my toilets super clean, so for the sake of example, I demonstrated a dirty toilet using coffee grounds.
1. Deodorize the Toilet with Shaving Cream
Spray shaving cream across the bottom of the toilet, making sure to get that crease against the floor. Spread it around with your hands and let it set for 10 minutes to deodorize the space. Use a damp clean cloth to clean up all of the shaving cream. You can also use vinegar if you prefer a natural option.
2. Clean the tank with these toilet cleaner options
Poke a small hole or two in a bottle of Spic and Span container with a sharp object. Remove the lid from the top of your toilet tank and place the container inside. Place the lid back on, and let the cleaner leak out to clean your tank and toilet. If you don’t like harsh chemicals, you can also use a Castile soap bottle or vinegar.
Tip: Conserve water
Place a full water bottle, vinegar bottle, etc into the tank of your toilet. This bottle will fill up the space in your tank, and the tank will fill up with less water. You’ll be conserving water with every flush.
3. Clean the Inside of the Toilet
Option 1: Use Kool-Aid and Rubbing Alcohol or Vinegar.
For a dirty toilet, use Kool-Aid to clean and deodorize. The citric acid will start doing its work, and the lemon smell is refreshing. However, Kool-Aid alone will not disinfect your toilet, so add vinegar or rubbing alcohol. Scrub the toilet completely, including under the ledge, and flush it all away.
Option 2: Use a Cola Product
You can also use a cola product like Pepsi Zero to get rid of rings and stains.
Option 3: Make Toilet Bombs
Mix baking soda, Kool-Aid, and rubbing alcohol together to form a ball. Place the toilet bomb into the toilet and watch it start to fizz. The baking soda is an abrasive cleaner, the rubbing alcohol disinfects, and the Kool-Aid makes it smell good. Scrub it all out and flush the toilet.
4. Clean Under the Rim
Place vinegar on a paper towel and put it underneath the rim of the toilet. Leave it overnight, and it will loosen up all the debris that needs cleaning off. If you don’t like the smell of vinegar, use rubbing alcohol instead.
5. Protect Screws and Bolts from Rusting
You can protect the screws of the toilet from rust by placing clear nail polish or topcoat nail polish on them.
6. Clean and Polish the Handle
Clean and disinfect the handle with rubbing alcohol and then polish it with baby oil. This will make it shine nice and bright. This works well on faucets as well.
7. Make an Air Freshener
Remove the lid from a spray bottle and fill it up with water. Add a splash of lemon juice or Downy, depending on your preference, and put the lid back on. Shake it up and spray it in the bathroom for a fresh scent.
And that’s it! With these simple hacks, you can make your bathroom smell fresh and clean without breaking the bank.
Toilet Cleaning Tips:
- Use a toilet brush to scrub the inside of the toilet bowl and under the rim.
- To remove hard water stains from the toilet bowl, pour white vinegar into the bowl and let it sit overnight. Scrub and flush in the morning.
- Use hydrogen peroxide to disinfect and remove bacteria from the toilet seat and lid.
- To clean chrome fixtures in the bathroom, mix equal parts water and vinegar in a spray bottle and wipe with a cloth.
- Use a cup of borax (or dawn dish soap) and boiling water to unclog a toilet.
- Don’t forget to clean the toilet seat hardware, bolts, and screws with a damp cloth and vinegar solution.
- Grapefruit can be used to remove rust stains from the toilet bowl.
- Always wear rubber gloves when cleaning to protect your hands from harsh chemicals and germs.
Bonus Step: Clean the Shower Doors Mix equal parts vinegar and water in a spray bottle and spray it onto the shower doors. Let it sit for a few minutes and then wipe it away with a towel. For tough soap scum, use a pumice stone or baking soda to scrub it away.

Cleaning a badly stained toilet may require some extra effort and specific cleaning products. Here are some steps to clean a badly stained toilet:
Empty the toilet bowl: First, turn off the water supply to the toilet tank and flush the toilet to empty the bowl.
Apply cleaning solution: Apply a toilet-bowl cleaner that contains bleach or hydrogen peroxide, or a mixture of vinegar and baking soda to the inside of the toilet bowl. Allow it to sit for 10-15 minutes.
Scrub the bowl: Use a toilet brush or pumice stone to scrub the inside of the bowl, paying special attention to the areas with the most stains. Be careful not to scratch the surface of the bowl with the pumice stone.
Clean the rim and tank: Use a sponge or cloth to clean the rim, tank, and outside of the toilet with a mixture of water and vinegar or a mild cleaner.
Flush and repeat: After scrubbing the bowl, flush the toilet several times to remove all the cleaning solution and residue. If the stains persist, repeat the process until the stains are removed.
Prevent future stains: To prevent future stains, consider using a toilet-bowl cleaner tablet or dropping a few drops of essential oil, like tea tree or eucalyptus, into the toilet bowl between cleanings.
Note: Always wear rubber gloves and ventilate the area while cleaning the toilet.
There are several effective tricks to clean a toilet bowl. One of the best ways is to use a combination of baking soda and vinegar. First, pour a cup of baking soda into the toilet bowl and let it sit for several minutes. Then, pour a cup of vinegar into the bowl and let the mixture sit for about 10 minutes. Scrub the bowl with a toilet brush and then flush. The baking soda helps to scrub away stains and odors, while the vinegar acts as a natural disinfectant. Another trick is to use a pumice stone to scrub away hard water stains and rust buildup, but be sure to wet the stone and the toilet bowl first to prevent scratching.
Both bleach and vinegar can be used to clean a toilet bowl, but they have different properties and uses.
Bleach is a powerful disinfectant and can effectively kill germs and bacteria in the toilet bowl. It’s especially useful for removing tough stains and grime. However, bleach can be harsh and emit strong fumes that may be harmful if inhaled. It can also damage certain surfaces if not used properly.
White vinegar is a natural cleaner and can be used to remove mild stains, watermarks, and mineral deposits in the toilet bowl. It’s also an effective deodorizer and can help to eliminate unpleasant odors. Unlike bleach, vinegar is non-toxic and safe for use around children and pets. However, it may not be as effective in killing germs and bacteria as bleach.
Ultimately, the choice between bleach and vinegar depends on your personal preferences and the severity of the stains in your toilet bowl. If you have tough stains and want to disinfect the bowl, bleach may be a better option. If you prefer natural cleaners and have mild stains, vinegar may work just as well.
