Frankenstein Porch Decorating
1. Lay out the table cloth and cut it
The first thing I’ve done is laid the tablecloth out so it’s nice and flat. I’m going to cut strips of the white tablecloth and cut the green tablecloth into strips as well.
This is our house and I definitely don’t want to cover the far right column because it has the house numbers, so I’ll be using the two left columns. I’ll be focusing first on this column in front of my door.
2. Tape one of the strips to your porch column
What I’ve done is added a little bit of Gaffers tape. I’m starting a little bit below the top of the column, but I could start all the way at the top If I wanted to, but I knew this would be a little obtrusive and hard to work around.
3. Wrap the column with the strips
I’m starting about eight inches beneath that and I’ve added a little tape. Now what I’m going to do is start wrapping the column with the green tablecloth, then as I get back here I lower it just a little bit and continue to wrap around the column. I’ve got my Scotch tape and I’m going to tape this next strip to the last trip and then keep winding.
4. Cut the black table cloth to become the hair
For this next step, I cut the top part, so the tablecloth was long. I cut it off and then I added zigzags to the bottom using tape to hold it in place.
5. Add the Eyes and face
I have an eyeball and I’ve taken some Gaffers tape and looped it. I’m going to place this on the back of the eyeball. The reason I’m not using hot glue is sometimes it can melt a tablecloth, so I feel like this is better.
Next, I’m placing the eyeballs onto the green tablecloth. I’m in the process of making a face. You can use your creative ideas to make your facial features, using eyeballs, and black foam eyelashes or you can create any embellishments you like using black card stock or black construction paper.
So here’s how he looks all finished up.
Mummy Porch Decorating
1. Tape one of the strips to your porch column
Now we’re going to start on the second column. I added some Gaffers tape again.
2. start winding the strips around the column
I started winding the white tablecloth around the column.
3. Add Eyes to your mummy
I have an eyeball and I’m taping the back with gaffer’s tape, again the reason for this is so that I don’t melt the tablecloth.
4. Finish wrapping the column
I started from the back with another piece of gaffer’s tape and came in and overlapped the eyes from the bottom, so now they’re just overlapped a little bit from the top and the bottom. Now I’m going to continue wrapping all the way down the rest of the column.
5. Color the mummy
I added a crisscross pattern, but I also noticed that because my column is white it just didn’t show up quite as much as I wanted it to. Mummies are often dirty so what I’m doing is using a little brown crayon to give it some depth and definition. That will help it stand out a little bit more. I’ll continue doing that and then I’ll show you what it looks like.
Here’s my mummy and I am so thrilled with how he turned out.
Now if you don’t have columns at your home you can easily take this basic theme and apply it to your front door by wrapping strips into your door. You can make either a mummy or a Frankenstein. You can see my other version of a door mummy on my blog.
If you are looking for other front porch ideas you could easily add some of these:
- spider webs (or use fishing line as it can’t be seen but feels like cobwebs)
- hay bales
- black lanterns
- string lights
- mini pumpkins
- black crows
- skeleton hands
- pumpkin topiaries made from orange or white pumpkins
- spooky sounds
- large spiders or even those giant spiders
- hanging witch hats
- spooky Halloween decorations from Dollar Tree
- faux pumpkins with white lights in them
- paper lanterns
- fall wreath
- tie cornstalks around your pillars
- paper bats
