1. Pick your garden type

Gardening for beginners instructions

1. Pick your garden type

You can plant your garden in a raised bed, flower pot, baskets, window boxes or in the ground with edging. For this simple tutorial, I’ll be creating a garden with an umbrella. I placed my umbrella upside down.

2. Make sure there are holes for drainage

2. Make sure there are holes for drainage

You’ll want to make sure you provide well-drained soil for the roots of your flowers. Start by making sure there are holes in the bottom of your flower pots, or in my case I poked holes in the umbrella to help promote good drainage.

3. add small rocks and garden soil

3. add small rocks and garden soil

Place some small gardening stones on the bottom of your flowerpot or umbrella. This will lift the roots for proper drainage. Then place rich potting soil on top of the rocks.

4. plant your flowers

4. plant your flowers

Start by digging a big enough hole for the roots and base of the plant to go into the dirt. Place the flower into the hole, and bring the dirt up around the edge of the plant. Press down lightly to firm up the soil around the plant.

The type of flowers you pick for your garden will depend on where you want to plant and what grows best in your area or planting zone. Other things to consider are:

  • How many hours of sun will your planting spot get
  • Do your flowers need partial shade or full sunlight
  • Do you want to plant your flower bed with perennial plants, perennial flowers (for example daylilies that grow back year after year), or annuals (these need to be replaced every year)
  • What soil types do you have

Each plant should inform you of what it needs when picking out the flowers either by seed or plant at the nursery.

I have full sun and decided on some succulent plants for this tutorial. they don’t have deep roots so I didn’t need a lot of soil in my umbrella.

5. Water your flowers

5. Water your flowers

Once your garden is planted, water the plants to give them the moisture they need. When picking out flowers the seed packet or container should have instructions for how much water the plant will need. Most flowers will need to be watered daily. You can also touch the soil, you want it to be moist – not wet and not dry.

I’m really thrilled with how this garden turned out, and this is a great way to begin. Planting in an umbrella can even be used in a small space.
