Chalkboard Tree and Message Board

Don’t you just love Dollar Tree?  I do.  I was at the store the other day and I found this cute wooden tree at Dollar Tree and it just jumped right into my cart. I had a few different ideas but nothing was working as I thought it would.  Then it hit me!  I made it into a chalkboard tree and message board!

Here is the original wooden tree I got from Dollar Tree.

I grabbed my Folk Art Chalkboard Paint and a paint brush, covered my work surface with wax paper, and got ready to get started.

I painted on 2 coats of the Folk Art Chalkboard paint letting it dry between each coat. I then let it dry overnight.

I seasoned the tree with chalk. To do this simply coat the entire board with chalk. This will make the chalkboard be able to erase. Without doing this step sometimes the things you draw on a chalkboard stay and won’t erase well.

After it’s completely coated, erase the board and it’s ready for use.

The possibilities are really endless! Use different colored chalk and decorate your tree, use it as a message board, or even a countdown calendar.

  1. Oh I love this!! I love the Dollar Tree too — I hope they still have these trees. I have some of the chalkboard paint that I’ve never used. Thanks for this idea, and thanks for sharing at Thursday Favorite Things.

    1. Thank you so much Pam and I’m thrilled you want to give it a try too. I even loved the look of the chalk rubbed on the chalkboard as it gave it a snowy look. Might do that when we get to January.

  2. Such a great idea – I love that is seasonal and functional
