Laundry Room Update: Easy Updates on a Budget with Video

I’m sharing my laundry room update with some easy updates on a budget, and I’ll share some other options and tips as well.

I have a fairly small laundry room so I took this opportunity for a DIY project. I decided to update my entire laundry room once again in order to add some laundry room features I have been wanting and I think it will be a huge improvement. Storage for laundry supplies is key in a small space and the good news is there are some small changes that will make a huge difference.

I'm sharing my laundry room update with some easy updates on a budget, and I'll share some other options and tips as well.

Laundry Room Update Video

We invested in a Waterworks ozone smart laundry system. This is going to save us tons of money! No more laundry detergent uses cold water and it’s eco-friendly. As for my top priority, it uses no harsh chemicals. Here’s a look at what the unit looks like. It’s really light and takes up limited space. I can’t wait to get this installed in my laundry room. The instructions are super easy and it took very little time to install.

We wanted to put it up here above our ledge but unfortunately, that didn’t work out so we had to put it below in order to have it close to an outlet. Here’s what it looks like installed in our laundry room. We pushed both the washing machine and dryer back into place and we’re ready to get rolling.

Laundry Room Update instructions

1. Create a Folding Table

I bought some contact paper from Costco. It’s nice and sticky and clear. As you see it didn’t quite cover the top of the washer and dryer so I cut two strips and overlapped them to cover the space.

Next, I purchased a desktop from Ikea to serve as a folding station. These were in the clearance section at Ikea for just five dollars and would make the perfect folding table. I’m sure you can find something similar at home depot. This will only work if you have a front-loading washer.

As you can see there are some raised portions and indentations on the washer and dryer so I needed to be strategic about placing my folding table.

Next, I purchased a desktop from Ikea to serve as a folding station.

I ran to Walmart and bought these little pads that I could place on the bottom of the desktop that would protect the surface of the washer and dryer and keep the folding surface in place.

2. Utilize your space

This desktop didn’t fit the entire space, but it turned out that was a great place for a couple of trash cans. I added one for trash, one for lint, and one for dryer balls (I use these instead of dryer sheets). I’m really thrilled with how this added functional space to my laundry room and overall I love the end result. I was able to create a folding table that I always wanted and I can now get rid of the ironing board pads.

3. Add a Stool

Now you might ask how I transfer laundry if it’s so low to the floor, well I created and updated this laundry stool which will be in another tutorial. I can use the step stool to reach the upper cabinets where I have additional storage, or I can sit on it and switch the laundry from place to place.

4. Add some Decor

On the ledge, I added a nice little beautiful light-up garland, but this could also provide functional storage if necessary. I added small touches by purchasing a sign from the thrift store and updated a couple of things for my laundry room. You can find those tutorials on my blog as well.

add laundry baskets for dirty clothes and clean clothes
if you don’t have natural light, make sure to upgrade to new light fixtures for proper light
I added a stick backsplash to my laundry room for an inexpensive option
I keep my cleaning supplies in my laundry cabinets but if you don’t have room there, you can look to store them in your kitchen cabinets or somewhere else you might have more space.
Utilize your lower cabinets for storage
If a laundry room remodel is outside your budget, note what the total cost is that you can afford and start there
Store things on the back of your cabinet doors to utilize space.

New appliances
New Cabinets, custom cabinetry, wood shelves, DIY shelves
Add a pop of color to make the room feel cozy and have a new look
new flooring
