A biodiversity survey published in the journal PeerJ revealed that over 100 different species of arthropods inhabit the average American home. Although most of these arthropods are benign, others are pesky pests that can wreak havoc on your house in various ways. As such, you must ensure that your home is free from these pests for the following reasons.

Let’s get started on getting your home pest free

1. Prevent extensive home damage

Pests can also cause significant damage to your property through their destructive activities. These animals can gnaw away at your furniture and other wooden structures in your interior space, ripping into them and carving out many holes. Over time, your home can experience significant structural damage, leading to high repair costs. Research indicates that termites alone damage up to 600,000 houses annually, causing US residents to spend about $5 billion every year to control them and repair damage. Therefore, keeping your house free from termites and other destructive pests is prudent to avoid extensive home damage repair and its accompanying high costs.

2. Lower your illness risk

It is no secret that pests are vectors of diseases, so their presence in your home puts you and your relatives at risk of catching various diseases. Cockroaches carry bacteria that can contaminate food and make you sick with diarrhea, typhoid fever, cholera, dysentery, Staphylococcus infections, and even food poisoning. Similarly, mice in your home can spread diseases like hantavirus, listeria, and salmonellosis through their droppings, saliva, urine, and nesting materials. Likewise, mosquitoes in your home and yard can transmit malaria, dengue fever, encephalitis, and the West Nile virus. Fortunately, ensuring that these pets are absent from your entire home lowers the risk of illness for you and your relatives. For this, you can contact pest control experts who specialize in mosquito control and protective barrier treatments designed to stop other pests from entering your house.

3. Lower the chances of a fire outbreak

Mice and other home rodents live in tiny gaps, vents, chimneys, and other warm hiding places. These rodents typically use combustible items like dead grass, lint, thread, paper, and pieces of cloth to build their nests. As such, fires can start if these nests block vents or are close to anything that can spark or get hot. Additionally, rodents can cause house fires by gnawing on wires, especially if they are a lot in your home. The National Pest Management Association attributes 20%-25% of house fires with unknown causes to rodents. Therefore, keeping your home pest-free is essential to reduce your risk of a house fire.

4. Protect your closet

Many pests like clothing, so they typically enter into closets to feed off various fabrics. For instance, many moth species are attracted to natural materials and are known to snack on clothing. Therefore, you likely have a moth infestation if you find tattered pieces of clothing in your wardrobe without any identifiable cause. Also, these pests can lay their eggs on these fabrics, ruining them as a result. Consequently, keeping your home pest-free is crucial to protect your closet from damage.
