When we bought our old house almost 17 years ago it was only 1 1/2 years old.  Sadly it was not in the best shape when we bought it.  Over the years we have updated it, fixed things that broke, and all the things you do to your home.  Then there is my entryway laundry room.  This is not a room I spend “quality” time in.  I have mostly ignored it, done a few things here and there to better organize it, etc. I’m going to show you my inexpensive laundry space makeover.

Recently I noticed that the cabinets were turning yellow in between the cracks. It started to annoy me and I decided to give the room a little love - but on a very tight budget.

Here’s the old laundry room. Recently I noticed that the cabinets that hold our laundry supplies were turning yellow in between the cracks.  It started to annoy me and I decided to give the room a little love – but on a very tight budget.

For my paint - I used Dixie Belle Paint in the colors Hurricane & Fluff.

I painted the edges of the cabinets in the Fluff and the back ledge in the Hurricane. I also painted the yellowing part of my washer and drier in the Hurricane as well.

Laundry Room Makeover Instructions

The first thing I did was paint the edges of the upper cabinets with a fresh coat of paint in the Fluff and the back small shelf in the Hurricane.  Even though my washer and drier had plastic that was turning yellow, I couldn’t just run out and buy new appliances so I painted the yellowing plastic.

Once the paint was dry, I was ready for the cabinets. I had bought some contact paper online. I place the contact paper on all the doors and the sides of the cabinet.

When the contact paper was all in place I was ready I put new handles on the cabinets.

I also used Polycrylic to coat my Dixie Belle Paint on the ledge in the back.

I added a peel and stick back splash to the laundry sink as well.

I have baskets above my washer and dryer. I put these up because seems like things were always falling behind the washer and dryer and it added extra storage. I decided to give them a face lift too by spray painting them with Rustoleum spray paint.

I was done in one day and had a fresh new look for about $40! Now I need to upgrade my laundry tub and faucet... that'll be next :)

Once the baskets were dry I put them back up in my laundry room. I also didn’t have space for an ironing board so I added a magnetic ironing mat to the top of the dryer.

It didn’t take short weeks, but in one day I had a new laundry room, mud room, and small space with a fresh new look for about $40!  Now I need to upgrade my laundry tub, faucet, and new light fixture, that’ll be next 🙂  I am so thrilled with my small laundry room makeover with a fresh modern look (or a farmhouse laundry room). This complete overhaul to a beautiful room makes me smile every time I go inside and doesn’t feel so much like a utility room. Laundry day has become fun at last (well okay maybe not entirely, but it’s definitely better).

How do I style my laundry room?

  • Remove your cabinet doors and enjoy open shelves
  • Store your laundry detergent, dryer sheets, and cleaning supplies inside your cabinet doors to hide them
  • Utilize your base cabinet under your utility sink to store eye soars and supplies
  • Keep a small laundry basket handy for dirty laundry, and your larger laundry baskets in your bedrooms.
  • Maximize additional storage by getting creative
  • Add a hanging drying rack with a removable tension rod.
  • Brighten your laundry room with a fresh coat of white paint or change your wall color with a bright color to make it look like a new space
  • Get a stacked washer and dryer to conserve space
  • Add wicker baskets or other baskets on the top shelf to hide laundry supplies
  • Add floating shelves to create more storage
  • Add decor and maybe a wall treatment to give the room a little boost.

These small changes to a small room with little money can make a big impact. Are you ready to change your laundry room look? What are the biggest changes you’d make to your laundry area?

    2. I am sure it will do just fine. My Mother covered all her countertops in a granite looking contact paper in the 70s. Looked like granite, held up to a feisty woman that cleaned, plus 5 of us kids. Lasted until the family home sold in 2016, when it was remodeled. Never had a problem with it coming up from edges or seams.
