I grew up in Minnesota where we have plenty of bugs. I’m a mom of 2 and now live in Colorado. We are always looking for an effective way to keep the bugs away. Let’s talk about using Irish Spring Soap for bugs. Many things do not like the strong smell of soap. The smell of Irish spring soap is an acquired one, and these bars of soap are ones that bad flies, bugs, and larger animals don’t tend to like. Irish spring soap works and make sure to use the original scent for this cheap hack.
A good rain will wash the Irish spring bar soaps away and it’ll be a good idea to reapply. If you don’t like the smell of strong soap like Irish Spring, I’m also a fan of lavender soap for this process as well.
I like it because it is the perfect option for anyone on a tight budget. The best part is that this strong smell of the soap is for indoor use, and outdoors and any time of year.

rub Irish Spring Soap on doors and doorways
I rub Irish spring soap onto my doors and door edges. This helps keep the flies out of my house. I even rub the door frame edges. If it rains it will wash the soap away over time, so you’ll need to reapply.
I do this process to all of the doors that enter my home. For me, that means the front door, back door, and the door that comes in from the garage.
Place bars of irish spring soap around the home
You can scare many bugs and animals away by simply putting a bar of Irish spring soap where you don’t want them. You can make small pieces of Irish spring soap and spread them out over spaces as well.

Keep bugs away while your sitting in outdoor spaces
I also like to put a bar in a mason jar and place a lid on it. This lid is from my Recycled Plastic Containers: Make Your Life Easier with These Awesome Hacks. I placed the bar in the jar, and then added the lid to it.
I then placed it inside an IKEA lamp that I had on hand and placed it on a side table by my chairs on my front porch.
When I want to sit on the front porch I open the lid and it helps to keep the bugs away. When I’m done using it I close the lid to save the scent. Closing the lid also protects it from the rain so the bar of soap won’t wash away.
I have rubbed a bar of soap around the edge of my patio table and chairs to help keep the bugs away. Just remember if it rains, you’ll have to reapply.
Shred Irish spring soap to keep bugs and pests away
I use a cheese grater to grate my Irish Spring Soap up. You could also use a food processor.
This is a single bar of soap. Depending on what you’ll be using it for you might want to make more or less. Scoop it up in a bowl and let’s talk about a few places to use it.
I like to keep mine in a mason jar with a recycled lid on. This allows me to open the bulk side, or the sprinkle side to get the desired amount out.
Place Irish Spring Soap in window seals
You can rub Irish spring soap on your window seals, and window frame or I like to put some of the shavings in my window for when I open them. This keeps the flies and other bugs out of my house.
Use Irish Spring to Keep Pests away
This is an area in our grass that was attached by voles. We are trying to recover the grass and we have put grass seed down. As it’s been coming up the bunnies have been eating the fresh grass and we are having a hard time getting it to grow back. I have sprinkled some of the soap in the grass to keep the bunnies away and let our grass grow.
I sprinkle the soap around garden plants that are being eaten by pests like rabbits.
I sprinkle the soap around the base of my apple tree to keep the squirrels out of the tree. You can see more of my tips and tricks in this post How To Get Rid of Vegetable Garden Pests with These 12 Easy Tips
Keep Bugs out of your trash
I place a few soap shavings into my trashcan plastic bag to keep the bugs away.
Make a bug repellent spray
I placed a piece of soap into a spray bottle and added enough fluid ounces of warm water to fill the bottle. I shook it until the soap dissolved.
I spray it on my plants to keep the bugs off and away. I also get aphids from time to time, and this spray kills the aphids and keeps them away. Once it washes off you’ll need to reapply it. You might want to see my other post on Keep Pests and Weeds Out of Your Garden
I also use this as a bug spray on our family just staying away from our faces of course. I have also sprayed this on our pets in the past too.
Use soap to help remove stains
I know this isn’t necessarily a bug tip, and just thought I would share an additional hack with you. I use a bar of soap to rub on stains before putting them in the laundry. This helps to attack the stain before putting it into the washing machine.
