Transform your home with easy DIY Halloween decor ideas for the living room, dining room, bathroom, and more! Budget-friendly Dollar Tree hacks, thrift finds & spooky DIYs included

I’ll walk you through my Halloween decor room by room—including my living room, dining room, bathroom, and even the staircase. Each space has easy DIY projects, budget-friendly hacks, and creative ideas you can adapt to your home.

And because I don’t want to spend hours packing things away later, most of these decorations are either flat or can be stored in vacuum seal bags. That way, they collapse down and tuck away neatly until next year.

Let’s get started!

🛋 Halloween Living Room Decor Ideas

The living room is the heart of our home, so I start decorating here. I layered cozy textiles, playful DIYs, and whimsical Halloween touches to create a fun, family-friendly space.

DIY Ghost Chair

Materials Needed:

  • White sheet
  • Black construction paper
  • Tape

I draped a white sheet over my rocking chair, cut two black circles from construction paper, and taped them on as eyes. Boom—instant ghost chair! This is one of the easiest (and cheapest) Halloween DIYs ever.

DIY Mummy Pillow

Materials Needed:

  • Pillow cover (Dollar Tree or Amazon)
  • White tank top (cut into strips)
  • Hot glue gun & sticks
  • Googly eyes (optional)
  • Pillow insert

I cut an old tank top into strips, hot glued them across a pillow cover, and added googly eyes for a playful mummy face. I stuffed the pillow inside and paired it with a cozy blanket for an easy Halloween couch refresh.

DIY Stenciled Pillow

Materials Needed:

  • Plain pillow cover
  • Stencil
  • Stencil tape
  • Craft paint + brush/sponge

I placed a stencil on a Dollar Tree pillow cover, taped it in place, and dabbed paint over it. After drying, I added it to my Halloween pillow mix for a custom look.

Halloween Blankets and Pillows

I like to use pillow covers and blankets for my Halloween decor. They have a big impact visually, and pack up nicely at the end of the season.

Vintage Lamp Makeover

Materials Needed:

  • Old lamp base
  • Flickering LED bulbs

We had a family heirloom lamp that I repurposed for Halloween. I simply swapped out the bulbs for flickering ones, and now it casts a perfectly eerie glow.

Table Cover

Bonus Tip: Tablecloths and runners boost visual appeal and pack away flat at the end of the season for easy storage.

Mantel Decor

  • Spooky window clings (Dollar Tree) for instant impact.
  • LED candles and a strand of lights draped across the mantel.

Whimsical Touches

  • Hanging Bat Plushies – I hung bat stuffed animals from the balcony above using fishing line.
  • Harry Potter Flying Key – A clearance find from Hobby Lobby. I attached it with fishing line and a shower curtain ring so it looks like it’s floating.
  • Golden Snitch Ornament – Hung the same way for a fun nod to Harry Potter.
  • Floating Candles – Dollar Tree and Amazon sell them; I hung mine with fishing line, and they even have built-in timers!

Accent Decor

  • Thrift Store Pumpkins – I filled hollow glass pumpkins with acorns and black walnuts.
  • Dollar Tree Nightmare Before Christmas Coasters – Functional, festive, and fun.
  • LED Houses – I leave these out year-round, but I change the light colors to fit each season.
  • Ghost – I took an Ikea doll and added a dollar store dish towel over it to create a spooky ghost.
  • Books – Stack some of your favorite spooky stories and add a pumpkin or skull to the top for a fun display.

🍽 Halloween Dining Room Decor Ideas

The dining room is the perfect space to go a little more dramatic. I love creating a spooky backdrop and layering in candlelight.

Halloween Dining Room

Graveyard Shower Curtain Hack

Materials Needed:

  • Tension rod
  • Halloween shower curtain (Dollar Tree or Amazon)
I hung a spooky graveyard shower curtain in the dining room window using a tension rod. During the day, the light shines through, and the whole scene glows.

Table Setting

  • Black tablecloth (a must for Halloween).
  • Dollar Tree Halloween placemats (affordable and stylish).
  • Thrifted candle holders rescued from the dumpster, paired with black LED candles.

Floating Candles

Chas hanging Harry Potter Candles

I hung Harry Potter–style candle lights from Amazon. They even came with a wand that turns them on and off, which is so fun!

🚻 Halloween Bathroom Decor Ideas

Yes—even the bathroom can get a Halloween makeover!

Are you looking for DIY Halloween bathroom decor? I create a few fun things with some supplies from Dollar Tree.

Skeleton Bath Cauldron

Materials Needed:

  • Plastic cauldron
  • Cotton balls or polyfill
  • Small skeleton
  • Eyeball ping pong balls or bulbs
I will take the bulbs with the eyeballs and place them in here as well, and what I've created is a bubble bath for the skeleton.

I tucked a skeleton into a cauldron, surrounded it with cotton balls, and added eyeballs for a funny “skeleton bath” effect.

Creepy Soap Dispenser

Materials Needed:

  • Clear hand soap
  • Plastic spiders
This will be great fun for your guests at your next Halloween party.

I peeled the labels off a clear soap dispenser, dropped in plastic spiders, and sealed it back up. Guests always do a double take when they wash their hands!

Spooky Candle DIY

Materials Needed:

  • LED candle
  • Crayon (red or black)
  • Lighter
Once you have the look you want, let it dry completely.

I melted a crayon onto the edge of an LED candle to create drippy, spooky wax. It looks just like an old haunted candle but is safe to use.

Crystal Ball Candle Holders

Materials Needed:

Are you looking for DIY Halloween bathroom decor? I create a few fun things with some supplies from Dollar Tree.
  • Thrift store candle holder
  • Small floral bowl (Dollar Tree)
  • LED tea light

I taped fishing line to a window cling, attached it to the bottom of a bowl, flipped it over a candle holder, and placed a tea light inside. The glowing effect is spooky and unique. 🪜 Staircase Halloween Decor

A staircase is such a fun spot for vertical decor.

Materials Needed:

  • Paper bats (Dollar Tree, Walmart, or printable template)
  • Adhesive (tape or included stickers)
Bats on staircase wall

I folded paper bats for dimension and stuck them climbing up the wall along my staircase. It’s simple, affordable, and makes a big statement.

🎃 Extra Tips & Hacks

  • Thrift Store Treasures – Spray paint can easily turn outdated decor into Halloween magic (like my owl and glitter pumpkin).
  • Magnetic Hooks – Perfect for hanging wreaths on metal doors.
  • Vacuum Seal Bags – My favorite storage trick. I pack away blankets, pillow covers, table runners, and window clings flat so they don’t take up much space.
