Are you wanting a home improvement checklist? I have 5 easy DIYs that you can get started on this weekend.

Finding a starting place for home improvement projects can be difficult. It can include so many to-do lists that never seem to end. Most homeowners tend to think their home is a work in progress. So sometimes you are looking for a win, a day that ends with you crossing something off the list. Overestimation is the DIYer’s biggest challenge. Many people go wrong when they take on projects that are too expensive, or too specialized. You need a project that is doable and makes you feel like progress is being made.

Luckily, here you will find simple, budget-friendly weekend DIY home improvements that are guaranteed to make your house feel updated and fresh.

Home Improvement Checklist

1. Replace Hardware

Changing the hardware is a simple but effective DIY project to tackle this weekend. It is a budget-friendly way to inject some of your personality into your home. You can choose from more modern or more traditional styles. You can change door knobs, hinges, cabinet handles, faucets, or outlet covers. The world of hardware is endless. It can be a great time to stretch your creative muscles. Replacing your doors or changing your cabinets can come with a hefty price tag and time investment. Changing the hardware is less time and money and still gives your home an updated look.

Always helpful to remember the smallest things can impact a buyer. Updating things like doorknobs and lighting fixtures can add resale value to your home without much effort.

2. Power Wash

Something that will improve the way you feel about your home is giving the exterior a spruce up. You may not even realize how dirty your outdoor spaces are, like your patio, deck, driveway, and even the siding. An easy weekend project is power washing your home’s exterior. You can even give your outdoor furniture a quick rinse and make it feel brand new. It is extremely satisfying to watch a buildup of dirt and debris wash away. If you don’t have a power washer on hand you can rent one for a very small hourly or daily rate.

Tackling exterior buildup is simplest when utilizing gutter covers to prevent it in the first place. They also cut down on the frequency of gutter cleaning. In addition, keeping the gutters clean is a great way to prevent a clogged gutter that can lead to ice dams in the colder months. Cleaning your gutters can be a big project and may not be easy for DIYers, be realistic about how comfortable you are using a ladder before attempting the job.

3. Change Your Bathroom Exhaust Fan

Showering, washing your hands, and flushing the toilet all send a lot of moisture into the air. Ideally, your bathroom fan will pull moisture from the air and expel it from your bathroom before it can damage your paint and cause mildew. However, some bathroom fans quickly wear out, so if you’ve noticed excess moisture in your bathroom it may be a good time to replace the fan to prevent any damage.

The best part of any DIY project is you get to choose what you want. You can choose the noise level of the fan, even if you want a light/fan combo. Take your time and decide which vent fan fits your bathroom best.

4. Patch Holes

It could be from moving furniture, hanging paintings, or maybe your kid has a great throwing arm. Holes and cracks in your walls can be an overlooked detail that ages a home. With some spackling paste, a putty knife, sandpaper, and some touch-up paint your home will look new again. Patching holes at first can seem minor but it can make all the difference in making a space feel new and improved. Also, a big benefit is the area is now prepared for painting.

It’s a good idea to inspect all parts of your home. Pay special attention when examining the cracks in your house, they can be a sign something more serious is happening and you need to call in experts for reinforcements.

5. Repair Windows

Windows are an important part of any home. Ensuring you have good windows can drastically improve not only the feel of your home but also the quality. Since window screens help deflect water from your house and keep pests out, it is worth checking them for holes. Repairing screens might take a few more tools and asking a few questions at your local hardware store, but is worth the effort. The best time to inspect your screens is during spring cleaning, then you will be ready for the summer when you want to keep the bugs out and the breeze in!

Sills, similar to holes or cracks, can be overlooked, but never underestimate the amount of seemingly small fixes that you can do on a regular basis to improve your home. Like screens, sills are crucial to preventing leaks. Repairing them now means saving money later on costly water damage. You would rather do the work now than get the bill later.

Regular Maintenance to-do list:

  • test smoke detectors, smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors and change the batteries twice a year.
  • change furnace filters and air filters on your hvac system on a monthly basis.
  • clean dryer vent and vacuum the vent connections.
  • if you have fire extinguishers make sure they are in good working order
