how to have a green lawn: Top Tips for a Healthier Lawn
Here’s a picture of our yard. It’s a big lot and it always needs work – don’t they all? We have fescue grass which is better in our dry Colorado environment.
Plus wait until you see the new Worx Landroid mower we got – it’s a robot and saves us a ton of time! We started by staking the wire around the perimeter of our yard for our mower so it knows where to stop.
What causes small dead spots in the lawn?
The first step is to determine why you have dead spots in your yard. Start with proper watering. How much water does your lawn need and is your grass getting enough water or maybe too little? Do you have enough dirt to create strong roots for your grass? What type of soil do you have? Clay soils and sandy soils have very different watering requirements. Does your soil have the essential nutrients to promote a healthy lawn and deep roots? These are a couple of culprits, but there are so many! You can certainly see brown spots from animal urine and also from critters, primarily voles.
Voles are an animal that tunnels through your yard and destroys the grass in the process.
We first had to get rid of the voles as they were living under our cement patio slab. We got rid of the plant that was attracting them (they love certain flowers and junipers). Then we lit a fumigant and stuffed it into one of the entrances under our patio. This will repel them and stop them from hiding there anymore.
To repair the tunneling damage they created you can just leave it alone and it will slowly grow back. If you want it to grow back faster rake away some of the dead grass and add some fresh dirt to the dead patches.
We planted some new grass seed in the dirt and watered as usual. If you add grass seed make sure to choose the grass type that is right for your area.
Another common cause of bare areas is animal urine.
This can be dogs, cats, or in our case rabbits. It’s a vicious cycle as the rabbits eat the grass down and create dead spots. While they are there they are urinating and that also kills the grass. Then when fresh grass starts to grow, they come back and eat the fresh stuff and repeat the pattern.
Putting a fence up will help keep the rabbits out of your yard. To grow the brown patches back, you want to neutralize the ammonia & nitrogen from the urine. Mix together 2 Tablespoons of baking soda with a gallon of water.
Pour the mixture onto the dead spots.
If you just have dead spots that are not created by animals. Sprinkle Epsom salt on the dead spot and water daily. The grass will grow back.
What is the easiest way to get rid of weeds?
Everyone has weeds and wants to get rid of them from their yards. Why are weeds bad? They weaken the grass plants making them more prone to lawn diseases, drought, and infestations.
I’m a girl who likes to keep everything as natural as possible and not use harsh chemicals.
You can remove weeds by digging them up.
Pulling the root system totally out of the ground will prevent them from growing and spreading.
You can also pour boiling water onto weeds to kill them.
Be careful not to hit other plants or your grass with the hot water as it will kill them as well. This is a great solution for spaces around trees, sidewalks, driveways, etc.
Make your own weed killer spray, there are several ways to do this naturally…
- Vinegar – spray straight vinegar onto the weeds.
- Mix 2 cups water and 1 cup salt and spray onto the weeds
- Dish Soap – Fill a spray bottle full of water and add 1 Tbsp of dish soap.
To tackle weeds in larger areas I add a gallon jug of vinegar to a weed sprayer. I also add 1/2 cup salt & 1/2 cup dish detergent to it. This helps kill those nasty weeds. Vinegar breaks down the plant, salt dehydrates, and the soap makes it stick to the plant.
You might notice your grass turning a little brown and dying a little but what’s important is will kill the weeds and allow the grass to grow back and be healthy.

How do you properly mow a lawn?
When mowing your grass it is really important to change the direction. If you mow in the same direction every time, your grass blades will lean towards the direction of your mow. Changing the pattern is the best way to get the grass to grow upright and that way you get a nice clean cut.
Our old mower just died so we got a Worx Landroid. We love that it was super easy to set up the perimeter so that it knows where to mow on its own. Plus it charged super fast – so we were up and running in no time.
The pattern varies keeping the grass growing straight up for a nice cut.
Okay, and on a side note, it’s a robot lawnmower so we can do the other chores while it’s mowing our yard which is nice. This helps us complete all of our tasks earlier and we get more family time together. Thank you, Worx for providing me with the Landroid for this post.

How long and often should you water a lawn?
In Colorado, where we live, we have dense clay soil that tends to hold water and or runoff. On the nights we water (4 days a week – almost every other day), we cycle through all the stations twice for a shorter period of time to let the water soak in.
I took this picture during the day so you could see the sprinkler but we water at night which is the best time to water
Watering is an important part of having a lush green lawn and there is not doubt an irrigation system makes that task much easier.

Great information about lawn maintenance. I am interested to learn more about that mower too.
Have a beautiful week,
Kippi
Thank you so much Kippi – we’ve had this yard for 20 years now… there’s always something new to learn.
What a novel idea for mowing your yard! I’m the “robot” of our lawn LOL, but I get lots of exercise that way!
Thank you Allyson and thanks for the giggle today 🙂 It’s been great since I had my 2 hip surgeries as I too was the lawn mower of our yard.
Great tips and we are grateful for the first time in 30 years we don’t have to maintain our yard, thanks to the newly laid sod that is beautiful and weekly lawn mowing by HOA landscape company. I just sit back and enjoy! #TrafficJamWeekend
Thanks Antionette – and I so appreciate what you’re saying. I look forward to that as well.

Wow, these are really great tips! Also, you have such a nice big yard! I, like you, prefer to use natural things on my lawn, so I’ve been wondering what to do about our weeds. You gave some really great ideas that I’m going to try for sure.
Thank you so much Pam and I’m thrilled that some of these might work for you too.

Thanks Marilyn for another wonderful party.
Thank you for the tips. I love your weed killing tips. I’m going to try your mixture with the vinegar. In my opinion, natural is always better if it works!
Thanks Amy, and I totally agree, if I can do it natural and chemical free – I will.
I really appreciate the part of your article that pointed out that pulling out weeds completely is the best way to kill them. I’ve always wondered how these weeds that constantly come back to my garden still stay alive even if I mow my lawn properly. To make sure that I don’t pull out the wrong plants by mistake, I’ll look for any weed control services that can help me out.
Thank you so much Afton, I’m so glad you found something in this article that can help you.
If you start to water a little less the roots in your yard become stronger and deeper and less susceptible to some pest (like grubs). It also better for everyone, I know a few farmers in Colorado (various areas) that have to give up as there is not adequate water. We now live in Central Tx and the last 3 summers we were not allowed outside watering (or sometimes only 1x a week) our grass has survived pretty well.
Also, weeds with runners should not be pulled unless you can get the entire runner (a lot of people do not know this). When pulled if there is any left it will multiply.
Thank you so much for sharing. We live in Colorado and have had water restrictions in place from time to time. Making sure there is enough soil for those roots to grow (above the clay) is also a key component for the grass to build that deep root system.
