Okay, one more for fun…Dry erase markers aren’t just for white boards. They can be used on windows and mirrors too. Use them to write reminders for your family on the bathroom mirror, or front door. Use them to decorate during the holidays! Let your kids and grandkids have a whole window to have fun on!

You can get a large pack with a wide variety of colors and you can pick medium-point, fine, or wide. I like that they’re water-based, you can write on the inside of the glass window (especially during winter), quick-drying, etc. This version is for you if you would rather trace something rather than freehand. You can also print something out so you can trace the outlines of your design as well.

  • Tape the stencil to the window using painter’s tape to hold it in place.
  • Color in the stencil with the dry erase marker, and carefully remove the stencil.
  • What’s great about the dry erase markers is that they just wipe off.
  • Here is the stencil on a mirror.

That’s it, and it just wipes right off when your done. Stencil or no stencil my kids have a blast when I give them the dry erase markers and an entire window to draw and color on.

Another Window Wax example:

Okay, next the blast from the past!  You might remember back in the early days a product called Window Wax. It was used to clean windows but it was also during the holidays to decorate them. Great for adults, and super fun for kids too!

  • Pour your window wax into a cup – it’ll be pink but after it dries will turn white.
  • Tape your stencil to the window with the painters tape.
  • Paint on the window wax over the stencil.
  • Carefully remove the stencil, and let the Window Wax dry.  It’s really easy to remove after the holidays… it is a window cleaner, and just wipes right off.  I give my kids paint brushes every year and they go to town on my windows with this stuff. They have a ton of fun and I get my windows clean. They have painted free handed and they have used the stencils as well. Fun any time of year.

Step 3: Prevent Bleed-Through Offload the brush before applying paint to the stencil. This crucial step helps prevent paint bleed-through, ensuring crisp and well-defined edges for your design.

Step 4: Add Depth and Dimension If using multiple stencils or colors, repeat the process for each additional design. For instance, use burnt umber acrylic paint to stencil another layer or element, enhancing the depth and dimension of your composition.

Step 5: Careful Stencil Removal Once the paint has dried completely, carefully remove the stencil, unveiling your beautifully stenciled design. Exercise patience during this step to avoid smudging or distorting the painted elements.

Writing on Glass Q & A

How do you permanently write on glass?

If you’re looking for a way to permanently write on glass, one effective method is to use glass etching cream. Here’s how you can do it:

1. Start by cleaning the glass surface with a glass cleaner to ensure there are no dust or fingerprints.

2. Prepare a stencil or design using adhesive vinyl or contact paper. Cut out the desired design using a craft cutter or scissors.

3. Apply the stencil onto the glass surface, making sure it adheres securely without any gaps.

4. Put on gloves and protective eyewear, then carefully apply a generous amount of glass etching cream over the stencil using a brush or spatula. Make sure to cover the entire design.

5. Leave the etching cream on the glass surface for the recommended time stated on the product instructions (usually around 5-10 minutes).

6. After the designated time, rinse off the etching cream thoroughly under running water, making sure to remove all the cream.

7. Remove the stencil from the glass surface and continue rinsing until the water runs clear.

8. Dry the glass completely with a lint-free cloth or paper towel.

The resulting etched design will be permanent and can withstand washing and regular use. Just be cautious when handling the glass as the etched areas will be slightly rougher than the rest of the surface.

Is it safe to write on glass with a dry erase marker?

Absolutely! Writing on glass with a dry erase marker is safe and easy. Not only can you use it on whiteboards, but you can also use it on windows and mirrors without causing any damage. It’s a fantastic way to leave reminders or create temporary decorations. Plus, it wipes off effortlessly with no residue left behind. Give it a try and let your creativity shine!

What is the best kind of pen for glass?

When it comes to writing on glass, the best kind of pen to use is a specifically formulated glass marker or paint pen. These pens are designed to adhere to glass surfaces and provide vibrant, long-lasting results. They come in a variety of colors and tip sizes, allowing for precise and creative designs. Unlike regular markers or pens, glass pens are waterproof and resistant to smudging, ensuring that your artwork or messages stay intact. So, if you’re looking for the best results on glass, opt for a dedicated glass marker or paint pen for the best experience.

What markers will wash off glass?

If you’re looking for markers that can easily wash off glass, I recommend using washable markers. Washable markers are designed to be non-permanent and can be removed with water or window cleaner. They’re commonly used by children for coloring or drawing on various surfaces, including glass. Simply apply the washable marker to the glass, and when you’re ready to remove it, dampen a cloth or paper towel with water or window cleaner and wipe away the ink. This makes washable markers a convenient and hassle-free option for temporary designs or decorations on glass surfaces.

Does Sharpie stay on glass?

Yes, Sharpie markers are known to stick to glass quite well and are often used for permanent designs or labeling on glass surfaces. Sharpie markers are oil-based and have a strong ink pigment that adheres firmly to the glass. The ink is resistant to fading and smudging over time, making the markings long-lasting. While Sharpie ink is considered permanent on most surfaces, it may be possible to remove or fade the ink from glass using certain solvents like rubbing alcohol or acetone. However, for a truly washable option, it is recommended to use washable markers or designated glass markers instead.

How do you remove Sharpie from glass?

To remove Sharpie ink from glass, there are a few methods you can try:

1. Rubbing Alcohol: Dampen a cloth or cotton ball with rubbing alcohol and gently rub the affected area. The alcohol helps to break down the ink and make it easier to remove. Rinse the glass with water afterward.

2. Acetone/Nail Polish Remover: Like rubbing alcohol, acetone can be effective in removing Sharpie ink from glass. Apply a small amount to a cloth or cotton ball and gently rub the area. Be cautious, as acetone can damage certain types of glass surfaces. Rinse the glass with water after cleaning.

3. Magic Eraser: This cleaning tool can be used to remove Sharpie ink from glass as well. Moisten the Magic Eraser and gently scrub the marked area. Rinse the glass with water afterward.

4. Vodka: This product does have cleaning properties, just make sure to use a microfiber cloth with it.

Remember to test these methods in a small, inconspicuous area first to ensure they do not cause any damage to the glass surface.

  5. I have been looking for window was for years! We used to decorate the windows in our home every year using window wax, a brush or sponge and our imaginations. My mother would color the window wax with a bit of food coloring and since it just wiped right off the glass when it was dried we could make our designs in color. I LOVED doing that each year and wanted to pass this tradition on to my boys.

  10. I always loved the snow windows! Yours turned out so well. Thank you for sharing.

    1. They bring back such wonderful memories, and I’m so thrilled that it cleans up so much better than the old stuff.

  11. Hi, i love your upbeat persona. My question: where do I buy stencils from? They are all rather expensive. I imagine that I won’t be using the same slogan or quote too many times, so a stencil purchase is expensive. I’m not artistic enough to create my own designs.
And this question is my big pop question that no one seems to be empathetic enough to “get” me. My passion to dabble with refurbishing furniture and paint is growing stronger. I HAVE NO CONFIDENCE to choose paint colors. HOW do I get around this hurdle? You had painted wooden leaves so beautifully, I’d have no idea where to start. I am a super creative preschool teacher. I can reinvent fun with just about anything. But this is a new chapter for me. I suppose I can just keep bringing home all the many curbside junk is that I actually leave at the side after taking everything else, and with no worry that I’ll ruin it, I can just go “crazy”!
I love that your projects are really easy for the interested layman that I am.
