Materials Needed:

Step 1: Place lights in the block

Put your lights into the glass block. The glass blocks already come with a hole in them. They are made for this, so you don’t have to worry about things getting hot. If you’d rather use battery-operated lights – go for it. They sell those at Dollar Tree as well.

Step 2: Apply the bow to the block

Cut the long ribbon off the bow.

Wrap one ribbon around the block. (This will be the bottom of the block.) I used scotch tape to hold it in place, but you could use double stick tape, glue dots, hot glue, whatever you would like.

Wrap the other ribbon around the block and secure in place.

Put the bow on top. You can just set in on, or you can secure it using tape, glue dots, etc.

Step 3: Plug in and enjoy.

Plug in and you’re done.

This project is easy, and great for all ages. Great for decorations, party crafts, or a gift. We used this for Christmas, but another thing I like about this project is that it can be used for birthdays too!   It’s easy to store, and I have had this for a few years now.

Happy Holidays everyone!

Here's the completed night light and I love it. Place this anywhere in your home and share the inspiration.

How To Make House Numbers

Our street light went out a long time ago, and many friends complained they couldn’t see the numbers on our home. So to welcome them and help them out, I grabbed some numbers and place them on the outside of a small block, placed the light inside of the block, plugged it in, and this is a different DIY glass block craft that was useful. You can see this and other address numbers at How To Make Solar Light House Numbers If you’re light is exposed to the elements you can add some outdoor Mod Podge to it.

Glass Block Crafts Q & A

What do you fill glass blocks with?

Glass blocks can be filled with a variety of materials to create beautiful and decorative pieces. Here are some popular options:

Fairy lights: One of the most common choices is to fill glass blocks with fairy lights or string lights. The lights illuminate the block from within, creating a magical and enchanting effect.

Decorative ornaments: You can fill glass blocks with various decorative items such as colorful beads, seashells, marbles, dried flowers, or artificial foliage. These objects add texture and visual interest to the block.

Fabric or paper: Another option is to insert fabric or paper cutouts inside the glass block. This can include patterned or textured papers, fabric scraps, or even photographs. The translucent nature of the glass will enhance the colors and patterns.

Sand or colored stones: Filling glass blocks with layers of colored sand or small stones can create an attractive and textured look. You can experiment with different colors and textures to achieve the desired effect.

Liquid and floating objects: For a unique visual effect, you can fill glass blocks with clear or colored liquids like colored water, oils, or even decorative glitters. Adding floating objects such as small plastic fish, flowers, or beads can further enhance the visual appeal.

Remember to seal the glass block securely after filling to prevent the contents from shifting or spilling out. Additionally, consider the overall aesthetic and theme you want to achieve when selecting the materials to fill your glass blocks. Let your creativity guide you in creating stunning and personalized decorative pieces.

How do you decorate glass blocks?

Decorating glass blocks offers a range of creative possibilities. Here are some ideas and techniques to decorate glass blocks:

Painting: Use glass paints or acrylic paints specifically designed for glass surfaces to add vibrant colors and patterns to the block. You can paint freehand designs, create stenciled patterns, or even use masking tape to create clean lines and geometric shapes.

Etching: Etching can be achieved by using etching cream or a glass etching solution. Apply the etching product to the surface of the glass block following the instructions provided. It creates a frosted or textured appearance, allowing for elegant designs and patterns.

Decoupage: Decorate the glass block with decoupage technique by applying decorative paper, fabric, or napkins to the surface using decoupage glue or Mod Podge. This technique allows for endless possibilities in terms of design and personalization.

Stickers and Vinyl Decals: Apply adhesive stickers or vinyl decals to the glass block for a quick and easy decorative touch. Choose from a wide range of designs and themes, such as floral patterns, quotes, or holiday motifs.

Embellishments: Add extra dimension and flair by attaching various embellishments to the glass block. This could include rhinestones, beads, charms, ribbons, or buttons. Use glue or adhesive dots to securely attach these decorative elements.

Laser engraving or sandblasting: For intricate and professional-looking designs, consider laser engraving or sandblasting techniques. These methods require specialized equipment and may be best suited for more advanced or professional projects.

Remember to clean the glass block thoroughly before decorating, and protect any areas you don’t want to be painted or etched using masking tape or adhesive stencils. Let your imagination run wild and experiment with different techniques to create unique and personalized glass block decorations.
